Yes. If the ball hand hits the ground you are down. You can keep yourself upright with your off hand. It's in the rule book.

Since the rule book doesn't appear to define "hand" and "arm", it is a judgment call right?
If so then the hand/arm wouldn't be reviewable in the booth right? But the leg / angle would be?
IMO:
Wrist = part of the arm
Palm = part of the hand
I think that his PALM was making contact and thus he wasn't down.

Ugh...couple things...
1. Game is over...move on.
2. I am pretty confident Auburn would have gotten in field goal range anyway.
3. From a common sense point of view...just looking at it...he wasn't down except by some obscure rule thing like the wrist junk some of you have talked about. I don't mind them applying the rules the way they did.
That said...
it's a pretty cheap way to get into field goal range to win a championship. Not Auburns fault but I hate to see a game turn on something like that.
I wish they had something like a "concede" rule where when something odd like this happens and both teams give up on the play they just blow it dead right there.

I bet Auburn would have wanted a personal foul if he had gotten tackled hard while he was standing around thinking the play was over. One of the Oregon players pulled off when he was on the ground prolly b/c he didn't want a penalty.

bamachick, I believe that the biggest difference between those 2 plays was that for the Arkansas player, his wrist that was holding the ball was the one that was on the ground while in the Auburn game, his wrist that was not holding the ball was touching the ground. I believe that the rule differentiats between the 2 which is why it wasn't called in one game and was called in the other game. I could be wrong, but I do believe that this was why it was called against Arkansas and not against Auburn.
