Just got back from the Nat'l Champ

I'm going to try and get all of my thoughts down. I'm sure I will forget some tidbits here and there, but I'll give it my best shot. I apologize for any ramblings...
1.) I had a blast. One of the best trips I have taken. It was much better than the Rose Bowl experience. I met a bunch of Auburn fans and had a blast with them all. They were all great. Excellent passionate fanbase. Everyone seemed to be civil with each other (before and after the game). I'm going to take a stab at it and say that they outnumbered us 65% to 35%.
2.) I'm not sure if you could tell on the television, but the field was horrible. It was for both teams too. From the start of the game to the end of the game, both teams were slipping everywhere.
3.) I am very happy with our performance in the game. I know I have posts on this site saying that I predicted Oregon to win (for pure biased reasons), but I "truthfully" thought Auburn would win. Hell, history speaks for itself. I am a major Pac 10 homer, but I will be the first one to admit that the SEC is far and away the best conference in the nation. Nobody can match them from top to bottom. 5 BCS Nat'l Championships in a row speaks for itself.
4.)The size differential between the two teams was much more than I had originally expected. Our speed was neutralized to the equally as fast Auburn team. Back in the day, teams like FSU and Miami could beat these much bigger teams (like Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State, etc.) with speed. Well, that doesn't work so much anymore when these much bigger teams (ex: the entire SEC conference) are just as fast, if not faster, than the every other team out there.
5.) Both teams had numerous missed opportunities. We squandered a few away in the red zone and Newton underthrew and overthrew 2 tds. However, I felt that Auburn had command the entire time. We had to resort to multiple gimmicky plays and 4th down conversions just to keep us in the game. And credit goes to Chip Kelly and the rest of our coaching staff. I thought Auburn should have beaten us by 14 points, but he kept our team in the game with some excellent play calling. We couldn't run the ball to save our life against the vastly superior Auburn defensive line so we picked on their weakness, the secondary. Major props to Darron Thomas who had around 360 yards passing I think and one of my all time favorite Duck players, Jeff Maehl. For a tiny, white receiver, the kid plays his arse off and makes numerous big time plays out there. LaMichael James running game was severely limited, but he made a few big time plays receiving.
6.) I thought our defense played to the best of their ability. I cannot ask for much more than that. We forced turnovers throughout the game and then when we were desperate and had to have one, Casey Matthews knocks the ball out of Newton's hand and we recover. Dyer (#5 for AU)....
kid is an absolute ball player.
7.) The Auburn defensive coach was tremendous. We could never get into a rhythm and he shut down any running game we had. I never thought we would have been held to under 100 yards rushing. Major, major props to him and his players.
8.) The 40 yard run by Dyer at the end of the game to put Auburn in field goal position WAS the correct call. That being said, I hate it. I wish they would amend that rule. Both teams (including Dyer) stopped and thought the play had been ruled dead. Safety Eddie Pleasant brought Dyer down (even though Dyer didn't touch) and I think that should be considered a tackle (in NCAA at least). That really let the air out of the Oregon defense and you could tell that was it. It was really disheartening to lose like that.
All in all, it was a great trip and experience. I'm very fortunate to have made the trip and hats off to Auburn. They were definitely the better team and deserved to win. We were fortunate to be in the position to win/go into overtime and credit goes to Coach Kelly for putting us into position for that. P.S. Mr. Knight, please get rid of the highlighter yellow socks we wore. I would much rather the team wear black or white socks.

Um, so why should the rule change?
If he's not down - he's not down.

So what you're saying is if a guy lands on top of a pile with the ball, but never hits the ground, then he's down?

True. If that's the case, I don't like the rule where a ref can pick a defender to allow a team to pick up a huge fourth down conversion. I think they should just replay the down.

They have to get out of Dallas alive first.....

My sister and her boyfriend live in Bend, Oregon. Small world.

Your safety needs to finish the effin play. You play until the whistle.

This
and no one blew a whistle... if your Def played until the whistle this is a non-issue

I still thought his wrist was down, but it was way too close for a play to be reversed.

The converse is the inadvertent whistle. In both cases there is the perception the play is over even when technically, it is not. One of those "deal with it" elements of football.

I'm sure it is hard to hear the whistle on the field when everyone is screaming. Hell, the running back got up and just stood there. It looked like even he thought he was down. Like I said, it was the correct call.

LSU will be extremely tough. I do feel more confident in our offensive abilities playing them though considering it is the first game of the year.

He obviously didn't think that through. He wants the rule to say the runner is down if the runner and the defense BELIEVE he's down.

If you think Auburn had a tough D you are in for a world of surprise.

Great post. IT was a good game even if it lacked the offensive fireworks everyone expected going in.
Is the wrist considered down? i thought that was just considered an extension of the hand and the elbow is what has to be down?
