I don't really mean "have to" in the sense that the NCAA is making them sit him. I'm speaking more to what would be the prudent thing for them to do if they want to give the appearance of cooperation.

Not only that but it clears victories from being vacated/forfeited if player was found to be ineligible.

No they don't HAVE TO sit him. At this point in the season they don't really gain or lose anything by sitting him. If they sit him, they're taking their best player off the field while they're 9-0 and ranked second. If they bench him and hes ruled eligible, they could cost themselves a shot at a national title. If they bench him and hes rule ineligible, best they could do is a 3-9 record so no bowl for them. Its only beneficial to bench a player in such a situation if theres an investigation or rumors of it early in the season. Like UNC did with Marvin Austin
