Who knew Bobby Bowden turned down Auburn twice?

I didn't.
quote:
While serving as an FSU assistant in 1967, Shug Jordan offered Bowden the offensive coordinator job at Auburn. At the same time, he was offered the coordinator job at West Virginia. While admitting the Auburn position was better, he chose the Mountaineer job because he thought Shug Jordan would be there forever and figured he had a better shot of becoming the head coach at West Virginia - which he ultimately earned.
Bowden was again approached by Auburn in 1980. This time the call came from Auburn President Harry Philpott. He wanted Bowden to be Auburn's next coach.
While preparing to play Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, he was holding secret talks with Philpott and members of the board of trustees. "I wanted to make sure that no one found out I was talking to Auburn," said Bowden. "I did not want my boys distracted while they were preparing to play the Sooners."
Ultimately Bowden couldn't pull the trigger. "Look, I can't take this job," Bowden told Philpott according to the book. "I just signed a five-year contract extension and I'll have to pay Florida State $750,000 if I leave."

Wow, did not know that. I have always heard the Bowden to Alabama stories, but I have never heard this.

Is it that difficult for you to ignore my threads if you don't want to see them?

Is there any way to block posters?

Well, we missed on him twice too. Should have been hired in 1983. And definitely should have just given him the job on a silver platter in 1986.

Bowden is one of the biggest hypocritical scumbags in the CFB coaching business. We didn't miss much not hiring him.

I have not read a sports book in at least 10 or 15 books. Is that one pretty good, I am due for sports read?

I would have rather had him than Curry.

I disagree. Thinking he should have been hired without an interview with the AD or President is ridiculous, imo.

You're just a complete a-hole aren't you? You bash our QB for no legit reason and now you're bashing Bowden?

And hiring Curry to spite him was a better idea?

I would have too. But at the time, in 20 yrs coaching, he had 3 - 10 win seasons. He was good and had some good records, but nothing to warrant the arrogance he had at that time to be "offended" at having to interview for the Alabama head coaching job.

I think he turned down LSU in 1979 if I remember correctly. FSU beat LSU that year and he decided to stay at FSU.

You're a dumbass. The man is a fricking winner. And Bama definitely should have hired him after Bear. Probably would have a couple more NCs in the trophy case if he had been hired.

Bowden said that the LSU game in 1979 convinced him that he could build something special at Florida State.

No. But he was 6 yrs removed from a 10 win season. Bama was only 7 yrs removed from back to back NC's. He should have interviewed for the job. He acted as though he was bigger than the University at that time. While he did great at Fla St, I'm betting alot of good coaches could have done equally as well, if not better, as the State of Florida hit it's stride during his time there. I.E. Florida/Miami...
