A new baseball stadium on the horizon for Alabama?

There have been rumors for a year about a new baseball stadium, once the South Endzone Expansion and Foster Auditorium (women's basketball) is done. BOL hinted at such in a free article today. I like their idea on where to put it too, altough the rumors suggest it would be built on the land bought from the state owned Bryce Hospital.
quote:
A new baseball stadium: Although Sewell-Thomas Stadium seats 6,571, not being able to see into the corners or the bullpens is a huge drawback and it also doesn't take advantage of the area beyond the walls like other stadiums.
In short, the stadium is clearly in the bottom half among Southeastern Conference facilities, where even Arkansas' Baum Stadium (10,500 capacity, 34 luxury boxes) has been surpassed by the likes of Carolina Stadium and LSU's Alex Box Stadium. Also ahead of Alabama are Ole Miss, Auburn and Mississippi State.
Since this is a wish list there's no harm in thinking big. How about a riverfront stadium downtown, with Tuscaloosa also using the venue for state events and local games in addition to attracting an independent minor-league team? No problem, right?

WE need one and we need a new basketball arena also. I want to keep coach Grant, I think he will do a great job at Alabama and then someone will take him away from us.

Bama 7th in SEC baseball home attendance this year, with #8 Auburn hot on its tail. An SEC, CWS-caliber program needs more seats imho.

That would be a great if they do this.

Alabama had one of the largest stadium ten years ago when CWS appearances were getting regular.

Bama needs baseball fans before they should build a new stadium. I agree that it's in need of updating.
But Coleman Coliseum is a giant dump, and a new basketball arena makes a lot more sense than a new baseball stadium. Bama fans atleast support basketball somewhat when they're good. They don't for baseball.

I think they'll come after the success from this year. Averaging 4145 for 27 home games isn't terrible. That's still good for about 112k paid attendance on the year, and that's without a home regional.

Paid average looks decent, but there's less than half of that actually in the seats.

It would be nice for a new baseball stadium with better seating and stuff period

Just what Tuscaloosa needs...more downtown construction. However, it would indeed be badass

Alabama has been in the national top ten of attendance since the mid-90s. A new baseball stadium is likely to happen in a year or two.
Coleman had a $30 million addition in 2004. Not to mention the new practice facility being built that is attached to Coleman. No way a new arena is going to happen anytime soon.

Yeah, I know. I get back two or three times a year now, and there's new construction going on every time I get back. But it's good to see downtown coming back.

It needs to be on the river or on the land that UA got from Bryce

I have been clamoring for this since 2000.
In the early 00's there were several guys on the baseball team who I played with and grew up with. Therefore I got be friends with several guys on the team. It started becoming obvious around 2002 that we were falling behind when it comes to facilites.
The Joe was supposed to receive a facelift that year and a new jumbotron but it got eighty-sixed from some higher ups. It took about 6 year more years for them to finally get a replay board and new scoreboard.
In the mid to late 90's baseball was the only sport that was consistently producing winners. Despite the perceived slump we have won a few SEC tournaments and a SEC title since then.
There aren't many that know the whole story around Wells' first retirement but it the above was the main trigger point. He was in the right also. Luckily, Mal and company came to their senses. They were promised upgrades and finally got a pay raise for their assistants.
For years Bama had one under paid assistant and the rest of the guys were paid from camps!
After Wells stand, we were able to hire Gaspard back (making him the coach in waiting) and we also hired a top rate pitching coach all the while keeping a very good assistant in Dax Norris around.
The next step is facilites. There are two local high schools that have more room to hit indoors than Bama. 'Nuff said.
A new stadium is needed. And if that isn't in the cards they need at least a state of the art indoor facility.

Yeah, the '99 series in Tuscaloosa was the first super regional I ever attended. I remember thinking that Bama had a nice stadium and a lot of fans for the time, but what was good 10 years ago in college baseball is no longer good enough today.
