McClain is one of five finalists for college football's top linebacker award
(The SEC has 3 of the 5 finalists)
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama junior linebacker Rolando McClain was named one of five finalists for the 2009 Dick Butkus Award on Friday. The award has been presented annually to the best linebacker in college football since 1985.
McClain is joined by Sergia Kindle (Texas), Eric Norwood (South Carolina), Brandon Spikes (Florida) and Sean Weatherspoon (Missouri) as this year’s finalists. McClain, Spikes and Weatherspoon were all finalists last year.
The Butkus Award is named after Dick Butkus, who is considered one of the greatest football players in history. Butkus was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, following an illustrious career with the Chicago Bears, University of Illinois and Chicago Vocational School.
The Decatur, Ala., native is the heart and soul of the Crimson Tide defense this season, anchoring a unit that leads the SEC and ranks second nationally in rushing defense, allowing 2.4 yards per play and 72.8 yards per game this season.
In addition, the Tide defense ranks second nationally in scoring defense (10.9 ppg) and third nationally in total defense (239.3 ypg). The Crimson Tide has held eight of its first 10 opponents to less than 100 yards rushing and five opponents to less than 215 total yards in a game. Alabama has also held five teams to a touchdown or less this season.
McClain leads the team with 77 tackles and has also added 10.0 tackles for loss (-45 yards), three sacks (-26 yards), two interceptions (21 return yards), one pass breakup, eight quarterback hurries and a forced fumble that led to a touchdown.
McClain’s play has garnered him extensive national recognition. He was the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week after his 12-tackle performance against Kentucky on Oct. 3. He was named the Lott Trophy IMPACT Defensive Player of the Week following the Tide’s 20-6 win over South Carolina on Oct. 17.
Earlier this season, he was named a midseason All-American by Sporting News and is also a semifinalist for the Walter Camp National Player of the Year, along with the Lombardi Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award, which goes to the best defensive player in the nation.
Former Alabama All-American Derrick Thomas won the Butkus Award in 1988. This year’s winner is to be announced on Dec. 8, 2009.

I hope Ro' wins it. If not, he needs to go all Brandon Spikes on someone.

McClain 77 tackles
Norwood 66 tackles
McClain 10.0 tackles for loss (-45 yards)
Norwood 11.0 tackles for loss (-54 yards)
McClain three sacks (-26 yards)
Norwood seven sacks (-50 yards)
McClain two interceptions (21 return yards)
Norwood two interceptions (36 return yards)
McClain one pass breakup, eight quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.
Norwood three pass breakups, nine quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.
Norwood three blocked kicks.
McClain is a beast and rightfully in the top five. But I agree, Norwood should win, he's got some sick numbers. I'd put McClain 2nd behind him this year.

I just hope Spikes doesn't win. The dude is super good, but the eye poke thing should prevent him winning. I'd be happy with Rolando or Norwood.

He has the worst stats of everyone. He shouldn't win it.

I agree, but Tebow's stats don't warrant the Heisman, but I bet he's in New York.
Florida slurping.

Still think Rolando should win this on leadership combined with production. Not taking anything away from Cody, but I thought Ro was more deserving of being a finalist for the Nagurski.

5 for a loss (-18 yards)

I'm as big a Ro fan as there is. But I gotta acknowledge Norwood. He's just a tad better right now. That takes nothing away from McClain, it just speaks that much for Norwood. And being the 2nd best LB in the nation is nothing to sneeze at.

Spikes has missed nearly 4 games this season, kind of surprised he's a finalist while missing so many games.

I think Norwood should win; however, McClain would be second IMO. I hope the Saints get to pick up one of these guys with the 32nd pick in the draft.

Hunter, can't argue against Norwood. Intangibles with Ro make him 1a and Norwood 1b. I don't post as much as I'd like cause work keeps me with this silly blackberry on the road but wanted to let you know we said a little prayer for ya'll this week.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Also look at the rest of the defense around him.
Norwood has better stats just because the D around him isn't as good.
Not to take anything away from him, he's a stud for sure

I don't disagree with that. However, the second leading sack leader is also on their defense. It's really hard to differentiate between the two. Both are 1st rounders and will play on Sundays for awhile.

Norwood's obviously gonna get more sacks just how he's used. I think McClain's been the best lb in the country this year. That being said Norwood's been great and would be an ok choice.

But at the same time, that means that people can gameplan to stop him. Look at the Alabama/South Carolina game - y'all had him double blocked by guards/tackles/tightends the entire game and if my memory serves me right, they have a 200 lb guy starting at linebacker beside him, so it's not like he has much help. I'll give props to McClain though, as you can't really go wrong with either one of these kids.
