Has there ever been an active player die while a member of an SEC team? I was thinking about Derrick Thomas and thought how I cannot remember an Auburn, Alabama, or LSU player being killed while a member of the team.

Greg Pratt for AU in August of 1983 during conditioning during two a days (running 440's for time to be precise). He was the starting fullback at the time. Heat stroke.

It changed a lot for Dye at the time and how hard he pushed players. He said it affected him more than any event in his life, including the death of his father.

It also brought together the team for the 1983 season in which they wore a black patch on the jerseys in honor of Pratt all year.

Michael Guilford died in a motorcycle accident with one of the players girlfriends in 2007.

That girlfried "gave" Jamar Hornsby her credit card to use since she did not need it any more.

Eraste Austin died of heat stroke during the summer of 2001.

I think another drowned but can't find it.

UCF did have a summer death recently. Don't know the name but it is going to cost the coach his job ultimately. They can't afford to fire him but I don't think they will renew his contract.

Inexcusable for any player to die of heat stroke. The symptoms are obvious leading up to such a serious condition.

Somewhat true, but it has happened many many times in the history of athletics. That was 26 years ago and it continues to happen every few years in either college, NFL, or even baseball.

And it happens a lot quicker with a lot less warning signs than you are implying. In high school, it nearly happened to a player on my team my junior year. He became weak and disoriented in a matter of moments towards the end of practice (before conditioning). Minutes later, two of us were carrying him up the hill to dunk him in the wirlpool coaches were filling with ice and water until the paramedics arrived a few minutes later.

It can happen extremely fast. I have seen it. He was diagnosed with heat exhaustion and sat out for the next week and a half as a pre-caution, but my point is it happened in moments with little warning before he became weak and dizzy and collapsed.
