I am making my first trip to New Orleans. Is a hotel on st. louis and toulouse streets in a good part of the district?

Yeah that's fine. As long as you're not on Burgundy( a little sketchy), or too close to Esplanade (nothing wrong with that section crime wise, just considered the gay section of the quarter), you're fine. The quarter is really very safe. Just use common sense late at night and trust your instincts.......You're a few blocks from the heart of the quarter but the quarter is very walkable.
ETA: Actually, on second look, you are pretty much in the heart of the quarter. Very good location.

yea that's where I put friends up when they come in town. kind of a central location for the quarter really and if it's the same little small local hotel you will love it

the Astor Crowne Plaza is on the corner of Canal and Bourbon. The Royal Sonesta is a few blocks in and centrally located(plus you can geta Bourbon St balcony), and the W has 2 locations, 1 by the casino, and 1 in the Quarter... any of those locations would be my suggestion, as all are nice, and I've stayed in each. The Ritz is running promotions this summer as well and is top of the line

A hotel I would really recommend for history, price, and location is Le Richelieu. It's on the corner of Chartres and Barracks, so you're basically halfway between the busy section of Bourbon and the Marigny. Also only a few blocks away from the French Market.
It's also one of the very, very few hotels in the Quarter with free parking for one car per room. And it's in a quiet area so you can actually get a little sleep even when you're sleeping in after a long night.

Say a prayer when you get near the city limits.

Omni Orleans is okay. I stayed there once. I go to Nawlins 3 or 4 times a year just to eat and party or catch a show. I have never felt unsafe in the Quarter. I think the Nawlins Po-Po run a tight ship in that area. Although I did see some cops chanting "Chug Chug Chug" to two fine girls turning up longnecks on Bourbon. I thought that was unusual for cops but very funny.
