Is calling an Aubbie an Aubbie disrespectful?

My wife and I have met a couple that went to Auburn.
The second time I met her was at the monster jam (had to take my son) and she was digging through her bag looking for her flask (no kidding). Anyway, I call her my Aubbie friend. Is this a no no for someone you don't really mean to offend?
I expect some good advice.

I don't think they really care or take it in a derogatory way. At least I've never gotten that impression.
