This ESPN documentary premiered on the SEC Channel last night, and tells the story of the epic clash between Texas and Alabama at the 1983 CWS. Some terrific athletes from both teams are interviewed, including Roger Clemens and Calvin Schiraldi (who was a better pitcher than Clemens at the time) for Texas, and first baseman David Magadan for Alabama. Magadan was the best hitter in the country that season, with an eye-popping .525 batting average. His college career batting average of .439 is still the SEC record.

I was there. My first CWS. Dad took me. I remember being scared every time Magadan came up to bat.

Next best chance we had was in the 90's. Right before the deciding game one of our best players stepped on a baseball in warmups and tore his ankle up. Was a starter in the field, but also pitched and a good hitter.

Roberto Vaz was his name, I believe.

Alabama had a great 30 year run in baseball from 1980-2010. Barry Schollenberger and Jim Wells had some phenomenal teams. Unfortunate they ran into better teams in 1983 and 1997 at the CWS.

Sounds like a good watch. Do I need ESPN+ in order to stream it?

Assuming you have the SEC Channel in your cable or streaming package, you should be able to stream it on the ESPN app via the SEC+ option (after doing a search for the title, you'll be presented with either an ESPN+ option or SEC+ Network option to stream it).

Finally watched it. Pretty good. Though it was strange seeing the view on SEC baseball in the early 80s. Not much respect.

Because the SEC didn't have Texas yet, and LSU still sucked.

The 83 team was probably the best team Texas has ever assembled.

Team record....66-14, I think most wins in one college season all time. Correction, Whicita St. had 72 wins in '82
ERA....2.72
Complete games pitched 40
1983 CWS Champions, 5-0 defeated James Madison, Oklahoma St., Alabama, Michigan, Alabama

Calvin Schiraldi: 14-2 record. 140 innings pitched. 18 starts. CWS MVP. MLB World Series
Roger Clemens: 13-5 record, 3.04 ERA, 166.0 innings pitched. 20 starts. MLB World Series. Cy Young winner 7 times.
Mike Capel: 13-1 record. 108.2 innings pitched. 17 starts.
Kirk Killingsworth: 12-3 record with 7 saves. 30 games.
Steve Labay: 7-2 record. 10 starts.

Sabo and Larkin at Michigan.

Some serious talent in Omaha that year.

Not sure if it was the first but it was the first ESPN telecast I can remember and was totally absorbed with it ever since. Like it or not, ESPN built the CWS what it is today. We had a decent run 2 years later and can remember where I was when Greg Elena hit the walk off for Miami against Bobby Thigpen.
