I’ve read/heard that Gunner may have an issue seeing the middle of the field. It makes sense due to his lack of height and huge OL/DL in the SEC.
I didn’t play QB so my question is does the game slow down enough in his second year starting to help him in this regard? Or does his height make that difficult to overcome?
Love Gunner, he’s a tough player and a DGD I’m just spitballing here.

Beck was plenty tall and that never stopped him from throwing the ball straight to defenders during the middle stretch of the 2024 season.

Gunner definitely needs to go through his progressions. There were plenty of stalled drives in important games where we had a WR or TE wide open and Stockton never saw them.

Wonder what the pass chart (besides the obvious screen spamming) looks like from the Tennessee game to the Texas game. He was playing pretty darn good through that stretch. Post Texas game there was legitimate Heisman ceremony invitation buzz.

Post Texas something happened and he looked really bad and unsure. Even against the cupcake team.

I know he seems to struggle with touch in general. He missed several wheel routes to Delp over the course of the year that should have been explosives

Hopefully he is more confident in what his eyes see and trusts himself to make the throw.

Maybe just me but I would see the same thing in most of our QBs recently. Windows of time where the effort to avoid turnovers seemed to overwhelm let it rip. Conservative coaching philosophy. Then, we would get in critical situations and look like a different QB.

Yeah I could see that.

Gunner gets yelled at in practice to protect the ball for two years and then were surprised when he wants to double check a throw before letting it rip.

Not sure how you balance that because you definitely don't want a turnover prone QB. But a timid QB is bad too. Stetson in 2022 was the perfect mix. He had a swagger about him that helped him a lot.

I agree — you can argue that Gunner is over-coached in some areas, but the Dawgs also need to develop him further and teach him when to loosen up and take control. Basically, if he avoids mistakes, UGA wins, but things change when they’re outmatched, and he’ll have to step up and make some plays.

I’d question his IQ before I question his heart or vision

This is an extremely insightful post. I’m not here to start a debate about OC but I do think our QBs are coached really hard not to throw INT’s. So much so that they’re reluctant to let it rip.

Ints are a function of throwing to the middle of the field. I think we know we can out defense teams if we can avoid turnovers.

I suspect this to be the first year they let Gunner throw over the middle because of his experience.

I don’t think it’s a matter of letting him or him not being able to do it, I wager he’s coached to take what is given to you which we’ve all heard UGA QBs repeat. Also, he probably isn’t running a lot of drills on a regular basis where he’s trying to press so the reps aren’t there.

Also, although the OL improved there were a lot of games where he didn’t have time for routes to develop. It got better mid season and then he struggled after Bobo went out. Cooincidence?

Not possible. He'd die on that field if it meant UGA won.
