The NFL combine is the biggest joke of the year. Let's dive in to my reasoning.
1. Why do OLs run the 40? If they are fast running a 5.1 does that mean RB's have to slow down running so they don't pass their blockers?
2
Vertical jump, are we looking for rebounders? The absolute only position groups that should be tested are DLs.
3. Why do QBs need to tested for bench presses? So they can pick up a DE coming off the edge and pick him up and throw him to the side.
These are just a few examples of how much this is a clown show. Just watch the film, interview them to see what kind of person they are and test for their particular needs. If some idiot GM would hire me I would make improvments without being in Indy. As much as they want it to be, it is not rocket science.

More data can’t hurt. At least probably not on average.
Vertical jump is a nice way to measure explosion. One measurement isn’t the end all be all but everything together is surely helpful for scouts.

Because you get 10-yard splits off running a 40 which equates to explosiveness and quickness.

Vertical and Standing Broad jump are excellent measurements for just how strong a players lower body is, something that directly translates to almost every position in football

Do any QB’s actually do this?

Most use the combine athletic results to either justify what they see in tape or identify players from smaller programs or teams that had bad years that need to have extra film study done on. The days of workout warriors who can’t play being drafted solely on potential are gone.
Additionally, I’ve heard McShay and Kiper and Jeremiah state that the medical side of the combine is the 2nd most important only behind interviews.

Dumb take.
1) OL run 40 to show athleticism. OL pull, block on screens, sprint to ball to finish plays. A 5.2 doesn't make a huge difference v. a 5.3 but no coach wants slow. Slow =not explosive.
2) Again, explosiveness is name of game. Show me best verticals and I will show you great clean guys and I will show you great players. Of course, there are exceptions but very few.
3) Bench press is safe and can be controlled with a spotter. Players get hurt all the time squatting and cleaning. It's def the least important though.
I REPEAT SPEED KILLS!
What would you have them test? They already do some basic skill drills as well.
