. . . prohibition was in effect in Alabama, a total ban on alcohol in the state till 1966.

Previous to this I believed that Oklahoma was the final state to repeal prohibition which it did in 1959.

Having said that I know from the experience of my own family that just because it was illegal didn't mean it didn't happen.

The people who supplied booze prior to the ban being lifted were called bootleggers and it seems everyone knew one.

In my family the story of One-Legged Jack has been told and retold many times.

Any Alabamans who want to weigh in on what your parents or grandparents did, feel free.

Did you read this on Facebook?

I'm pretty sure you could buy beer here in the early 60s but there was a vote in 1966 for local option on hard liquor. But it wasn't hard to get it prior to that, though.

The bootleggers and WCTU would campaign in unison to keep counties dry.

The county I grew up in in TN did not allow restaurants to sell liquor until the mid 90s.

The last bootlegger I knew was a Georgian from the Savannah area, sold stump hole and moonshine. Would run a weekly route of bars between Beaufort sc and pooler area. He was a die hard dawg fan named bill and all around great guy. Passed away bout two Maybe three years ago.
