CKD has lost just 2 games at Alabama when the offense produced 21 points

Vandy: 40-35 (2024)
OU: 23-21 (2025)
No reason for Grubb to fail to produce 24-28 in every single SEC game this coming season. The offensive personnel is sufficient for a good OC to do so.
Defense has only played poorly enough to lose to FSU, IU, and Vandy (2024) out of CKD’s 27 games so far. Not bad. 2020 defense allowed 40+ points three times that year for context.
I believe the 2026 defense will be the best group they’ve fielded thus far:
- Very big up Front. They finally have the 320lb bodies to play the 3/Shade and the 290lb bodies for the 4/4i/5-tech….no more 265lb 4-techs (Renaud) that get moved off the ball.
- Yhonzae Pierre is one of the best pass rushers in the SEC and will be a 1st rounder imo
- Secondary is the best in the Conference
- Xavier Griffin will start from Day 1 at LB
(CJ Mosely 2.0)

He’s an offensive minded coach.

True.
I do believe that he does emphasize all 3 phases and playing “complimentary football” more than most offensive minded coaches. He’s certainly not a Lincoln-Riley type that essentially ignores defense and special teams.

For sure. That’s just the thing that worries me when the offense has been stagnant.
And when the oline was rough last year I kept thinking “but even Grubb was an oline coach once. We should be able to hit on Oline coach hires.”

My big concern on offense is that we’re purely a younger roster on offense but also you can sorta presage many of the older OL players are likely to be depth. And FCS center may be the only OL starter with more than 2 years of experience. In fact, that is sorta why I suspect that guy is a shoo-in to be the center as long as he isn’t a Williamson type (basketball reference) projection bust from lower level ball.

Fair to note that offense and special teams lost that game for us, so I wouldn't even put it on the defense.

Someone said he regressed

I think for the reasons in my OP, along with a more manageable schedule, that 10-2 and (depending on tie-breakers) could end up back in Atlanta again and will make the Playoffs.
However, this is something I wasn’t even going to post about bc I know the negative responses, and that I also will probably be viewed as a sunshine pumper at best….. but I’m just going to go ahead and say it here:
I think Keelon Russell is a generational type talent. Obviously that’s a bold statement and the odds are certainly against it, but I see it in the film from high school and in the clips from the (very minimal) play he got this past season.
He’s just different. He’s so calm, he can step up and out of the pocket, or maneuver within it. He can take off and get to the sticks when needed and also make plays once the coverage breaks down and it turns into a scramble drill. His touch on deep balls is beautiful. He goes through his progression almost
like he’s playing 7on7. He’s just not bothered by bodies/pressure around him. I think he will be the story of college football next year.
As a result, I think we will see the real Ryan Williams who will form an amazing combo with Russell throwing him the ball. Alright, enough pumping I suppose, we should get a good idea on the Spring.

What position is Griffin going to start at in this defense at 205 or do you think he’s put on weight?
Situational pass rusher?

Biggest statistical outlier P4 result of any game in 2025 per Fremeau apparently.

How do you know that he weighs 205 ? That was probably his weight at a camp this past summer. He’s in the program, going through workouts and will be more bulked up by time the season starts.

I’d bet on Griffin to be between 215-220 by the fall.

He was recruited as an off-ball LB. His Rivals comp is Jihad Cambell (I think Xavier has more lateral speed imo). I think he will play the weak-side position that Justin Jefferson played. However, I would not rule out playing in the middle.
I’ve seen his weight listed anywhere from 198-211lbs….Justin Jefferson played legitimately (not his listed/roster weight) at 210lbs. The one verified measurement that doesn’t fluctuate is is Griffin’s 6’3 height.
We are able to put 15-20lbs of “good weight”/muscle on kids with a good frame at the D-2 level. Duke Johnson was able to put on 20+ lbs this past season at Alabama.
Griffin’s lateral speed is freakish and he’s very physical. His film reminds me more of CJ Mosely than Jihaad Cambell at this stage.
Look at the list of True Freshmam LBs that started under CNS:
- Rolando McClain
- Donte Hightower
- Reggie Ragland
- CJ Mosely
- Christian Harris (played Cornerback as a Senior at University Lab (1A) in Baton Rouge
- Trey Depriest (injury wrecked his career)
- Dylan Moses (same)
- Rashaad Evans
Many others who played a lot as well:
- Jihaad Campbell (rotated with Trez Marshal/was start in Semi-Final game vs Michigan)
- Reuben Foster (making the calls was the only reason he didn’t start day 1)
I’m sure I’m forgetting several others.
Yes, to your question about rushing the passer. He can certainly put his hand down as an Edge rusher in obvious passing D&D like Hightower and Rashaad Evans. Also, Jihad Cambell was used in that role in passing situations under CKW.
However, he will make his millions (NFL not just NIL) playing in the middle.
The staff feels confident with what they have on the roster at the LB position group, or they would have over-hauled it like they did the Dline.
I really like QB Reese, and I think he is a very violent player that uses his hands to block-protect and get off of blocks as well. I think Woodson (Va Tech transfer) and Reese will battle for 1 of the 2 spots, and Griffin will play the other.
Make no mistake, Griffin is a freak, and he didn’t come here as the #1 LB in the country to wait his turn.
He will rank high up on that list of TF LB’s I listed above that started under CNS by the end of his career at Alabama. Enjoy

We dont really know what any of the freshmen will report at do we?
But 205 is what all the services are reporting he was at during their evals so its what I was going with.
Heres what our group was last year each with 4 years in P4 weight rooms:
Lawson: 6'2, 225
Hill-Green: 6'2 235
Jefferson: 6'1 225
The other freak type guys who we had under Saban who got immediate run inside came in something like this based on what they were listed at by the services:
Moses: 225 (left at 240), 30 tackles
Mosely: 215 (left at 235) 37 tackles as a freshman
Evans: 220 (left at 234), was basically an edge rusher exclusively as a freshman
I love all those guys and Im glad to hear people are discussing him in that light.
If hes up at 220+ it seems plausible he could make a major impact on the inside, Im just trying to understand how that would happen if the listed weight is correct for a TF in any role other than edge/situational rusher because if you meet a blocker in a gap at 205-210 in the SEC the odds are you're being put on skates as a true freshman.

I tend to agree that Russell is probably going to be the choice if Mack isn't clearly ahead in the Fall camp.
I hope we can keep Mack around if he's not the winner out of camp.

I think theres just the one portal window now so both are here until next December/January now unless Im mistaken.
With Thomalla coming in behind Russell QB isnt really something Im too concerned about especially if they find a way to grab the kid out of Baton Rouge next cycle.
