Credit him for everything hes done for us. Im not ignoring all of that, but its interesting how we always have the softest 7 footers known to man.
We need some Donta Halls and Jamichael Greens

It’s 7am and this is on your mind? What happened at Hardee’s to make you make a thread just for this?

This is a sports discussion board and I'm interested in discussing why we have such soft big men.
Your comment adds nothing of value to a sports discussion board.
We could probably win a natty if wed find a dependable rebounder inside.

How hard do you like your big men to be?

Also, untrue. Bediako isn’t/wasn’t soft. Cliff O wasn’t soft. He wasn’t particularly skilled. Wague and Pringle only had grit and nothing else to contribute.
There was a guy named Herb Jones who played in the post a lot.
Those big men are pretty few and far between anyway. It’s not 1980 anymore. What teams have bigs this year that you’re wanting ?

Once again, nothing of value is added with this comment.
You come here to make gay arse comments like that because it upsets you that someone is being critical of our team.
Its okay to find faults in our program. Thats how we grow.
Oats is consistently outrebounded in important games.

Bediako averaged 5 boards a game.
Cliff averaged 6.5 here but 8.5 at Rutgers.
I dont understand why our bigs cant rebound

We rotate bigs a lot because we play fast and we play 5 out so the rebounds are more evenly distributed.
This year we haven’t rebounded well but that hasn’t been the case most years.

I think you'd have to go year by year for a fair assessment.
The Clowney/Miller team rebounded very well.
Most of our rebounding issues against top teams has been that they have lot more Amari Allen or Brandon Miller level rebounders that also have offensive skills.
It's obviously not that Oats isn't trying to recruit players like that. They're just usually NBA prospects with offensive skills that rebound so well and every top team is recruiting them.
It's not like Oats doesn't want a Mo Diabate that can also dribble drive, pass and light it up from deep.

The difference can be those players in the system's Rutgers or Purdue use are camped closer to the basket on both ends. So they get more rebounds. But I'd guess they average about the same per minute.
Oats offense and defense needs the other players to pick up extra rebounds since players are more spread.
That's why I mentioned his teams rebounding well when they have players at 4, 3 and 2 that don't get worked on the boards against top teams.

Ironically, his Final 4 team featured Grant Nelson at the 5 (more than anyone else), with Pringle as his primary backup off the bench. I think the offense is geared for a 5 that can stretch the floor offensively, but is also relied on heavily defensively in their primary “drop coverage”.
Bediake was by far the best rim protector and the defense was tops in the country, and Nelson when playing the 5 was the best scorer and that was the Final 4 team.
Seems like a productive 5 on either side of the court equates to success. Cliff wasn’t what he hoped for last year, but not bad either.

It's the main flaw in his system and why I think everything will need to come together for him to win one.
We needed Cliff to hit, because that's the "type" of big that can match up against any scheme defensively. A 4th or 5th year player that's developed some offensive craft in the post. The kid at Purdue, the kids at Florida, the kid at UCONN in the F4...we just don't have an answer for guys like that if we see them in a tournament.
I think every good team Nate has had has just been one piece away from being able to win it all (sans 1), but more often than not that one piece has been a great big man. The team with Miller, Clowney, Chuck, Sears, etc...that team had everything we needed to win it all, they just had a cold night against SDSU

He also definitely was not the reason Duke gave us the business. Hell big men weren’t the reason we lost to Tennessee
The worst games under Oats are when our guards get out-athletic’d on the parameter on both ends

We were leading UConn in the 2nd half. We can win with this system.
People act like Florida won last year because of their bigs. They won because because Walter Clayton and good defense.

An oversimplification of what Oats wants to do, and rarely applies even in a loss. No one being able to consistently drive to the basket aside from Philon contributed to the loss as much as the missed 3's.

Almost beating a Top 20 team without 2 of our best 4 players AND shooting poorly from 3 is not evidence that we “died by the 3”
Does anyone who ever says this stupid phrase stop to think that Oats’ offense, even when shooting poorly from 3, is a well oiled machine at getting easy 2s?
