What’s up with Bethea?

Ideal scenario for him to get solid minutes last night and he barely played again. Trelly was out, Mallette gave you zero points on 17 minutes and Philon/Holloway were struggling at times. He came into the game early and hit a three and never saw the court again.
I don’t understand it at all.

Im disappointed that he's not playing a bigger role so far.
I'd guess by how quickly he gets pulled that Oats has given him some exact instruction that he's not doing.

I feel like I’ve been the most vocal person about it on the board and I’ve stopped beating my head against the wall and accepted that for whatever reason Oats just isn’t going to play him. You’re right that it doesn’t make sense, but I’ve accepted that we won’t ever get a reasonable answer
Oats earlier in the year said he was working his way in and getting “used to blue collar basketball”. Well, when are about 7 of our regular rotation guys going to consistently play blue collar?
The crazy thing is, he plays hard when he’s in. He tries on d, crashes the glass, boxes out.
This really sucks because I think he’d be a great player for us, but we wasted a year of his eligibility and he’s a high profile player. You have to hope other transfers don’t look at this and not want to chance coming in to be 10th off the bench.

Can’t imagine what that is though. I’m a pretty astute watcher of basketball. There isn’t anything he’s doing that is bad and we’ve got starters and regular rotation guys with some pretty bad habits that aren’t getting pulled.

It's wild. He does talk some and mug a little, but he dives for loose balls and scraps out there. I have seen complaints about him being a bad shot taker, but i haven't really ever seen him take a blanket covered 3. The rule is, if you're open, you shoot. Which he generally does. And to be blunt, percentage wise he is doing it much better than Wrightsell or Mallette.
But most importantly, he is just a guy who has the ability to play above the rim with length and athleticism. It gives him a much higher ceiling rebounding and defending than those two as well. I have said it before that I don't really know what Bethea is, but I do know what Wrightsell and Houston are. They are really solid mid major guys who are serviceable at the power conference level but they are going to always be mismatched by athletic guards

If Bethea doesn’t get double digit minutes we riot

He doesn’t seem to play in the system. I’ve not seen anything in his play that says more minutes, except the case of injury to others.
Pisses me off too because he is the guy I was the most excited about that came in to the program

Watching Bethea getting more time last clarified why Oats hasn't been giving him more minutes.
I love that he has a nose for rebounds, is more athletic than any guard aside from maybe Philon, looks to make incisive passes and can shoot.
I think he's gonna be very good for us later this year (and definitely next if we can keep him).
However, it's clear that he's a bit of a wild man out there right now just doing his thing without much team concept.

He was very hot and cold I admit.
I think he played good D. Had some moments. Definitely looked messy at times.
I’ve been his biggest fanboy but I admit it was mercurial. Hope he keeps getting a shot and works his way in.

I think the hot and cold is more that he's as talented as anyone but just kinda doing his own thing without a lot of understanding of the team.
His problem certainly isn't putting a lot of effort into the defensive end and rebounding!
Completely agree that he could be a huge boon this season.
Also get that we as fans love to see the explosions of pure talent whereas coaches are popping blood pressure tablets when players are wildly all over the place.
