He would have been a solid hire.

Look what happened to Auburn when the AD hired Brian Harsin. No connection to the SEC or the Southeastern states.

Auburn had already hired the Russian by the time Whittingham announced he was leaving.

Harsin didn’t have Whittingham’s resume

Whittingham’s a good coach, but he’s getting up there in age to be a new hire.

10 years ago he would have been a great hire...giving a 66 year old a 5 year, 75% guaranteed contract...iffy.

This isn't a prerequisite for success. Look at what happened to Florida after they hired Urban Meyer. They won two national championships in three years and would have had a third if not for Nick Saban and the rise of Alabama.

After living in Utah and paying attention to Utes football for just over 10 years, I love Whittingham. He is just a damn good coach who does more with less. Will love to see him with a roster full of blue chips. Hell, I would have loved to see him at LSU.
Very solid hire anywhere he would have went.

Yep. Michigan said "the coaching pool is spent, we're not getting "our guy" this cycle and kicked the can down the road a few years.
Whittingham is the guy who's supposed to keep things from collapsing for a year or so, not win a title. Everyone involved understands this.
He might retire next season.

Bingo
Whittingham is a solid hire and probably the best hire Michigan could make due to all the scandals surrounding the program.
Reality is he is a bandaid to stop the bleeding and will be around for a few years, but is not a long term solution.

Auburn AD should have reached out ti him before hiring a G-5 HC.
