Alabama upset the heavily favored Washington Huskies in the 1926 Rose Bowl, putting southern football on the map in the process. Funnily enough, had the Heisman Trophy existed in 1925-26, Washington's star player - George "Wildcat" Wilson - would have likely been its recipient that season.
History never repeats but it does rhyme.

Whatever man. Auburn had already won five or six national titles by then.

Who knew ... Auburn was the real Dixie's football pride.

We are all standing in their mighty shadow. I'm just proud to share a state with such a titan of the game.

Apparently Albert Einstein was present at the game. Here he is posing with the Citadel marching band during the Rose Bowl parade.

Remember the Rose Bowl, we’ll win then
Some history here. When Alabama was winning in the Rose Bowl, to many Southerners it was a way of giving it back to the Yankees. Seeing how it was just 60 years after the War between the States. Same with Georgia Tech and Sewanee.

It really is pretty remarkable it's the 100 year anniversary to the day of Alabama becoming a true national football powerhouse.
Means nothing as far as today's game, but still pretty cool historically speaking.
