Under old regime, SEC (other than Georgia) is likely locked out of title

Let's look at home things would have gone if this was the '80s.
Indiana, ranked No. 1, would play in the Rose Bowl against Oregon, ranked No. 5.
Georgia, ranked No. 3, is the top ranked SEC team, and would play in the Sugar Bowl against Ohio State, ranked No. 2, the second place BIG team.
Texas Tech, ranked No. 4, would play in the Cotton Bowl against probably Ole Miss or Texas A & M, probably A & M because the bowl would want a Texas team to draw fans.
If Indiana wins its rematch with Oregon, then no way the OSU/UGA winner leapfrogs them, right?
Also, if Oregon beats Indiana, could they leapfrog the teams ahead of them, ala, Miami in the early 1980s when they beat Nebraska in the Orange Bowl and went from No. 5 to No. 1 in the final polls?

If this was the 80s/old days we would likely be #2. OSU only dropping 1 spot seems unlikely.

prior to 1992 the SEC's sugar bowl opponent was usuelaly a big 8/12 member. we would almost surely be matched with texas tech

I can't see how a major conference undefeated team would not be champion in this scenario

Which is why the BCS was the best system. 1 vs 2, with the other marquee bowl games keeping their prestige.

my only issue with this is that there are far more often than not, after 13 games of play, more than 2 teams that could make a legitimate case to be champion. However there are RARELY, if ever, more than 4.
I think 4 teams is the sweet spot. Give me the BCS (or the commitee of 2014-2022) and 4 teams and we're golden.

Question is, who do you pick as Indiana’s opponent? In the 80s it was Big 10 vs PAC 10, obviously that would not fit today. My hunch is w Indiana winning by only a field goal in the championship that there would be a rematch.
Now, if you wanted to be true to old days, then there’d also be no championship games. So likely it’s OSU vs Indiana in the Rose Bowl for the all the marbles, then Alabama would’ve been in the Sugar Bowl as SEC champs, likely playing Oregon.
Texas Tech would’ve gone to Cotton Bowl and played Oklahoma, Ole Miss and A&M to the Fiesta Bowl (to help avoid rematches) and Georgia plays Miami in the Orange Bowl.

1983 season, Auburn claims that one now. Auburn(#3) won the Sugar Bowl. #1 and #2 both lost their bowl game.

Pretty sure this is exactly what happened with Notre Dame leapfrogging Alabama in 1977.
#5 Notre Dame beat #1 Texas 38-10 in the Cotton Bowl
#6 Arkansas beat #2 Oklahoma 31-6 in the Orange Bowl
#3 Alabama beat #9 Ohio State 35-6 in the Sugar Bowl
#13 Washington beat #4 Michigan 27-20 in the Rose Bowl
Notre Dame leapfrogged Alabama for the title.
