Five years ago the vast majority of the rant loved the portal and NIL They argued it would be great for the game, the players, the fans. Anyone who questioned it got stoned in the streets. What about today?

Upvote if you still like NIL and the transfer portal. Downvote if you don’t. Don’t base it on some pie in the sky “if they do this”, base on right now - the way it is. Do you like it or dislike it?

I don't think this is true. Sure there were vocal supporters but this current iteration of the portal and NIL has never been a majority favorite.

ETA - And IIRC, NIL wasn't even around 5 years ago and the portal was basically just for guys willing to sit out a year.

What does this have to do with Lane Kiffin at LSU?

NIL is a means to an end. The portal is the same. The goal, since they killed the BCS, is a super league that mirrors the NFL. Get a commissioner to run the league, players sign over NIL rights to the league and the “free for all goes away. DI schools not in the league will go on as they did, the new College Football League will be chaotic for a bit but will settle down. The portal will be between the DI and the college football league, rules will stop guys from moving around in the College Football League every year. The money will make sense and the game will move on.

In the early days a player only got one portal jump. I support that. I do NOT support unlimited jumps.

5 years ago it was not a pay for play scheme. Under the original intent it was designed so players could make money off of their name, image or likeness. Meaning T-shirts or a burger sponsor where they agreed to help advertise. Things like that.

It was never started as a straight pay the player deal. Fans had no issues with them making money off their name. NIL is not even whats happening now.

We all hated the NCAA for decades for good reason. They are and were worthless.

Heck, NFL at least you get a set amount of years for your contract. CFB is way worse without any guarantees. Imagine if NFL had unlimited transfers and no salary cap.

It was great with the 1 free transfer rule. Ultimately they’ll have to drop the “no pay for play” garbage and allow players to sign multi-year deals with buyouts etc like how pro european soccer teams operate.

It still isn’t. That is why you can’t make a guy sign a contract to play at X school for X amount of time.

The SEC doesn’t like it cause they don’t have a monopoly on the highest paid players anymore. Welcome to the new world.

You are so wrong. Most people predicted that it would become exactly what it has become.

I will wait for you to pull out 5 different calendars and count up the days. And though it will take 5 calendars; 2021. 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025;, you can then argue it wasn’t really 5 years.

Then why do players have agents who negotiate money. Maybe they can’t make them sign but I think some schools are suing players for money back.

It’s the wild west and ruined CFB. Surprised the lesser players (majority of all teams players) haven’t formed a union and demanded their cut. Once that happens then you’ll have union contracts where they can go on strike. Not saying I want that just thinking out loud what can happen. At least those not getting paid/paid much have a scholarship.
