I like this hire. He did good work with their freshman QB. We need someone who can actually help a QB develop. Offense won't be fancy, it will look like UGAs, im ok with that.

I found this gem about Chip on reddit:
I thought we already had this stat.

Missouri is about to lead the country in horizontal passes on 3rd and 7+

I saw that, but keep reading, the freshman QB missed open receivers and dumped off with horizontal throws. But he got better as the season went on. Im sure Zollers will have growing pains too.

What potential players could he bring along?

Going to be more of the same. "Our identity is outside zone". The reality is that you have to be multiple in the run game. Offensive linemen are always blocking someone with an athleticism advantage. When that defender also knows where the play is going, they get to the spot first.
This is a meh hire.

UM fans complained about Underwood not developing all season. And watching him a bit, Underwood sucked as a passer.

Sometimes, what seems like an uninspired hire turns out pretty damn good...
Exhibit 1. Josh Huepal, sent to Siberia otherwise known as Utah State. OU fan said he sucked, Stoops scapegoated him. Comes to Mizzou, revives his career.
Exhibit 2. Blake Baker, a DC in name only at Miami as everyone knew Manny Diaz called the defense. Still he was fired. Came to Mizzou, did a hell of a job, revived his career.

I'll withold judgement, but there's nothing exiting or innovative about this hire. Clearly Drink has a comfort zone he will not venture from.
That was also my biggest problem with Pinkle. It clearly defined his ceiling, and will probably limit Drink as well.

Innovative coaches are the biggest lie in CFB coaching circles. Drink was sold to us as innovative. Lots of motion to induce bad matchups. We got the running game and horizontal passes. Arkansas hired Chad Morris, and his innovative SMU offense. Nebraska hired Scott Frost, he had that Oregon innovative offense. Chip Kelly really innovated things at UCLA. Mike Bobo keeps laughing at innovation.

I'm not going to kill this hire and hope he can produce a downfield passing game, but Josh Huepel is the same guy he was at MIssouri. Revive his career? Meh. He loves to pile points and stats up against cupcakes then folds when his offense matches up anything better than average.
IMO, this is going to be the defining hire of Drink's career. If the offense is more of the same Drink's going to be fired in 2-3 years having to play 9 game SEC conference schedules. Our offensive suckage has started to stamp our program as a place for receivers to avoid. Turning it around and fast is hugely important.
I echo everytrueson in wondering who can he bring with him and what is his recruiting reputation? MIZ

You just made my point about the fan perspective. You say Heupal is meh, but he's been to the CFB playoff coming out of the SEC not some G5 bid. So he goes from Utah State to the CFP but that's not reviving his career? This is why no decisions can be made based on fan perspective.

That is absolutely true. Hell, even Moore had "innovative" hung on him. I'd settle for some imagination and down field play action.

Huepal's offense with Batoon's defense the last two years is a definite playoff team. Lindsey's offense has never been that explosive ever. His career SP+ as an OC is 40ish.
Drink had Ferrari money and bought a used Ford Explorer with 85k on it.

I looked up the 2026 Michigan recruiting class, it looks like Lindsey was the primary recruiter for a 3 star QB only. Even their 4 star QB recruit didn't have Lindsey as primary. Bellamy looks to be their best recruiter on the offensive side. Most of Michigan's top recruits are on the DL.
Why is the Mizzou Safeties coach not fired???

You’re seriously dick riding Chumley?
Posted on 12/21/25 at 3:32 pm to GalacticaCannon
No... my point was he looked like total shite when he was fired from OU and ended up at Utah St. So when he was hired at Mizzou, everyone thought it was a terrible hire. Turned out not so bad. What can look like a uninspired hire can sometimes turn out to be a great fit. We've done it twice with Chumley and Baker.

True that was the sentiment. I think partially because Heupel is kind of a tool so he wore on people/administration/staff.
Getting back on topic, and doing a bit of research, they say Chip was instrumental in Drake Maye's development.
