LSU has to pay Kiffin a $250,000 bonus because Ole Miss won a playoff game

Lane Kiffin wanted to coach Ole Miss on the sidelines during the College Football Playoff.

However, Rebels athletic director Keith Carter made it clear to Kiffin that he would not coach during the CFP if he took a head coaching job at a rival program. Kiffin chose to become LSU’s next head coach, crushing his opportunity to win a national title with Ole Miss.

However, Kiffin is still tied to the Rebels’ success during the postseason. Kiffin will need his replacement, Pete Golding, to win games to help line his pockets.

Per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, LSU will pay Kiffin the same CFP bonus he would have received had he stayed at Ole Miss.

“Kiffin, who agreed to a seven-year contract with LSU on Sunday that will pay him $13 million annually, will receive the same CFP bonus from LSU that he would have if he had remained with Ole Miss through this postseason,” Rittenberg wrote.

“That begins at $150,000 for the Rebels’ participation in a first-round CFP game, increases to $250,000 for participation in a quarterfinal and tops out at $1 million if Ole Miss wins the national championship.”
Kiffin had $250,000 on the line when No. 6 Ole Miss played No. 11 Tulane on Saturday.

The Rebels didn’t miss a beat under Golding, racing out to a 14-0 lead on the Green Wave in the first quarter. They didn’t ease up, blowing out Tulane 41-10 in front of an excited crowd at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Kiffin earned the $250,000 bonus from LSU with the Rebels’ decisive win.

Ole Miss is next set to play No. 3 Georgia in the CFP quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. Kiffin will surely be cheering for the Rebels to upset the Bulldogs on New Year’s.
