Who should be the QB from the portal?

Happy feet and inaccuracy are his only consistencies. He’s been doing non-stop interviews about heisman and going to the NFL and it’s laughable how far away he is from being good. Take away all the NIL we planned to give him and give it to a transfer
Leavitt?
Mestemaker?
Sorsby?
Raiola?
Lagway?

Honestly I don’t think any of those QB besides maybe Leavitt would be an upgrade over Reed.
Raiola thinks he’s Mahomes. Lagway is a worse slower version of Reed. This year was literally the first year Mestemaker has played QB all year and to go from UNT to a starter in the SEC is a tall order. Sorsby will probably go into what’s a really weak QB draft class.

I doubt we get a QB in the portal

Agreed, I can admit that he isn't perfect while also acknowledging that none of our portal options are likely to be upgrades. And by going to the portal we will probably overpay significantly. I think that money would be better spent on putting a better team around him.

RS Junior Reed
RS Sophomore O’neill
RS Freshman brady Hart
RS Freshman Morcos
The best of the 3 backups looks like Hart in the limited action we saw. None of those were highly rated or expected to be a factor
We have a freshman Casuga coming in a few weeks. He’s expected to be good but he’s too young
I think the best option is Lagway. We were his runner up school. I bet he would take a discount to come back home and be the A&M QB.
He’s 6’3”. The raw talent is there. And if he gets beat out for the job then he still has a redshirt year left

I get the question and speculation... What I am interested in seeing is if Elko is interested in pushing Reed out as starter. If not, we have a problem.
Clearly Reed is not even a good passer... much less a great or elite passer. Got to have a great passing QB to make national noise. Scrambling ability is a nice to have but hitting receivers is paramount.
Just an average QB with some pocket presence on Saturday and we would have won by 2 scores. Wasted a very good defense this year with ineptitude passing the ball.
Streaky passing, lots of missed deep balls with wide open receivers throughout the season, entire halves of football games with no offense, all go back to Reed. Been a problem all year. Seen enough of him and time to move on.

Hell no on Lagway. He’s even worse than Reed when it comes to accuracy. Besides if he’s going anywhere in Texas it’s Baylor so he can just go suck over there.

Eh our defense wasn’t as good as we want to imagine. Only seven schools gave up more 30+ yard rushing attempts than we did and if we had Bama’s or Georgia’s schedule we would more than likely been a 7-8 win team.

I’m just glad Elko runs the program and not the average fan. Lagway? Good grief. He was statistically worse than Marcel, by a lot, despite being one of the few players you could find in the portal who was playing around arguably MORE talent and weapons than Marcel. And newsflash, he’s going to get $$$ to go somewhere because there’s plenty of schools desperate for a QB, so he ain’t coming cheap to sit the bench.
Look at the portal QBs from last year. Mateer, Beck, Mendoza are the guys that got teams to the playoffs. Only Mendoza has been clearly better than Marcel.
The reality is developing Marcel is the right thing to do. And thank goodness that’s exactly what Elko is going to do.

Then he has to get a lot better. I've watched A&M QB dysfunction for years. It has been forever since A&M has had a QB with the "it" factor based on performance. All the way back to JFF. Yeah, I know, Mond was serviceable.
As it stands now and you've said it, Reed has to be developed. Do you think Lane Kiffin will use a QB that has to be developed?

People just remember that he was a five star QB from Texas and never want to look at the fact the he was arguably the worst QB in the SEC. He has 14 INT’s this year, that’s 2nd worst in FBS. Only one starting QB averaged fewer YPG in the SEC and that was Arnold. Arnold was the only QB with a lower QBR than him too. But yeah sure let’s do everything to get his sorry arse because we can fix him.

Jaxson Dart and a literal former D2 QB named Trinidad Chambliss would like to say hello to you.

No we don’t have an elite defense. On Saturday it was more than enough. Possibly best overall game of the year.
Also, saw a post above about continuing to build a team around Reed. I just don’t see how you can build a team around a consistently bad passer.
While I am venting.,, the maroon goons.., give us all a break. That was a B- line all year. Too many mental mistakes, too many holds, and persistent inability to get a power run established. Really need an upgrade on Oline.
Finally, is Elko going to address the kicking game. Painful.

They kept us in the game but that had more to do with the fact that Carson Beck wilts under pressure in high stakes games. But we also can’t deny that Miami bullied us on both sides of the ball.

At this point Reed is what he is, he's been a QB no telling how many years at this point, probably since middle school. He is not accurate enough to be an above average QB and "developing" him for another 8 months is not going to change that. If Elko doesn't see that then that worries me about what is to come down the road over the next 5 years. Sorsby or Leavitt would be my top two choices, hell no to Lagway or Raiola.

From the stands, it sure seemed like Marcel had about 0.5 seconds to throw the ball each play. Not sure how it looked on TV

I had the opposite opinion
From my seat it felt like he had eternity and just refused to make a decision until it was too late

I completely disagree. He is inconsistent. When his feet are quiet and he is on time, he delivers a good ball. I agree that he never shows elite accuracy but he can be above average as a college passer, we’ve seen him do it this year. The last 2 games not withstanding. Coupled with his mobility I think his potential is to be a very very good college QB. There’s no quick fixes, we just have to keep developing our QB and all the positions around him.
If we let him go, it’ll be Tennessee or Kentucky or somewhere else that will get the better version of him and we will look real dumb when he is carving up other teams or worse, us. And you’d probably want Elko fired for letting him go despite advocating for it right now.

I’ll take Reed. Another year of maturity and hopefully the game slows down for him.
I think he needs to make better decisions on when to run and when to take a chance on a throw. Replacing KC and a stout O line will be a problem.
Would help considerably to have a bruiser RB that could wear down Dlines.
