Why does college football suck so much more now?

35 years ago, teams could play 12 games max. Things would be wrapping up and just about everybody would be rolling out basketballs. Only one SEC fanbase would still be thinking about a national championship. Right now there are 5. Wouldn't be SECCG this weekend, which is one less week of SEC football. And for the "the SECCG is irrelevant now," 16-18 million people will be watching and the outcome could shake up the playoff seedings.

And bowl games weren't some magical and mystical things like some fans like to remember. The Sugar Bowl was obviously awesome. The Citrus Bowl could be cool. But most SEC teams were playing in front of 30,000 fans at the Peach Bowl in Fulton County Stadium or the Weedeater Bowl in Shreveport, and the weather was always shitty.

Back in the day there would only be one more day of meaninful college games – January 1. Now there are 8. "College football sucks now" basically means that you are voting for college football.

Some people are just addicted to convincing themselves and others that everything sucks now and things used to be so much better. And when you post about how everything sucks now and things used to be so much better and people agree with you and give you a thumbs up, it provides a cheap dopamine hit. One too many negative nostalgic mot*****ckers, basically.

Prolly has something to do with rambling posts on message boards.

I’m just spitballing here.

Your entire post pretended the regular season was only as exciting as it is now.

And that couldn't be further from the truth.

The reason why you have 5 teams instead of 1 in the past is because in the past those regular season games were like playoff games. Their elimination games already happened. And many times it was at the hands of your own rivals.

Take 1989. Alabama goes into the game against Auburn ranked #2. Auburn wins and effectively knocks Alabama out of the NC. And it's the first time Alabama traveled to JHS. It was a huge huge game.

This year the only reason it was even close to having meaning is because Alabama had 2 losses. Otherwise, it's a meaningless game.

And it wasn't just the Auburn game that year. It was basically every game. We even played @ Penn St the week after we played a top10 Tennessee game. It all mattered a ton because we had to climb in the rankings.

So yeah, I guess if you pretend the regular season was as meaningless then as it is now, you can come to that conclusion. But in reality, the games all across college football had more meaning in the regular season than it does now.

So, in other words, the new way made this year's Iron Bowl a high stakes game when back in the day it would've been meaningless.

My solution is to go to sixteen but power conference teams only, then add 16 more teams in a G5 National Championship much like fcs teams.

Do away with bowls.

I like it where an upset loss isn't a death sentence like years ago for the national championship. Many of those years there probably would have been a different champion if there was even a 4 team playoff without conferences being locked into certain bowl games.

It was no where near the same. The very notion of being a NC contender is in itself extremely diminished. As you pointed out, it's now 5 teams instead of 1.

It amazes me how quickly some of you throw equal weight on the label. As if making the playoffs now has the same meaning it did 2 years ago. Or in the quality of team it previously took to be a "contender". It's just dumb.

Sure Alabama has a chance to win the NC this year, but we aren't really a national championship quality team and shouldn't remotely have a chance.

In fact, if Alabama wins the NC this year it will be the worst Alabama team I've ever watched win a NC. I still hope we win it obviously, but it will be the 2nd year in a row a team that shouldn't even be in it wins it because they got hot at the right time.

Call me old fashioned, but the participation trophy era generation is fricking retarded. Because that's all this bullshite is - oh look at me, I'm a contender! Yeah, so are a shite ton of other teams, it ain't that special anymore.

We use to argue over who was the best team, now we argue over which 2 or 3 loss team should be included. And you expect me to pretend it's better.

So you like having meaningless games so you can maintain the illusion of being a great team and contender for longer.

That's not a solution, that's just devaluing the sport even more.

Sound like stupid people who think the way to fix government is to add more government.

ESPN started pouring TV money into the system. Coaches and universities made millions and SCOTUS finally made them share it with the players. Now it's just minor league football.

There were 8 years in a row (1984-1991) when every SEC team already was out of the discussion for the national championship heading into bowl season. That doesn't sound like very much fun for anybody.

Making it trendy to drop letters from words and coming up with new trendy words like Prolly doesn't make message boards less annoying either. Everything sucks now and used to be so much better, even message boards.

The system now is so much better its not even funny. You could be 100% screwed years ago just from being ranked low to start the season or by being locked in a bowl game where you couldn't play the AP # 1 ranked team. What I don't like now is what the portal has done to college football. It may help for quicker rebuilds but it's nuts how easy they can leave.
