From what I have read he wanted any tier one job on the market but he was still radioactive to a lot of college trustees and athletic directors.
It took the peculiar desperation of LSU to get this one across the finish line, although the Tigers hiring him now after the last few seasons of less philandering and drunkenness and mediocrity makes its more sensible.

Then he talked to Nick Saban who repeated how his biggest regret in life is leaving LSU because it’s the #1 job in all of college football.

sounds like LSU gave Lane more NIL money and more control, while Stricklin wanted to be a bigger part of the hiring process after Kiffin got there.

I 100% believe this and this is why I never got my hopes up.

Sounds like he had all but eliminated Florida from consideration even before the LSU job became available.

From that same article:
quote:
The Ole Miss administration, including chancellor Glenn Boyce, did everything in its power to keep Lane in Oxford. They were willing to match salary offers that he got elsewhere. They were committed to maintaining a competitive salary pool to attract and retain the best assistants. They believed a national championship was possible at Ole Miss and just wanted Lane to believe it, too.
He ultimately could never get there, unable to resist the siren call of a "blue blood." Kiffin didn't believe he'd get a premier job again, according to those who know him well, not after he crashed and burned at USC. He had tried and failed over the years to get numerous big jobs that opened up, including Florida, Miami, Texas A&M and Alabama, but could never get traction. He seemingly had too much baggage for elite jobs, which preferred safer hires over the unpredictable Lane.
quote:
He convinced himself that Ole Miss offered no more security than any other SEC job, including the two pursuing him, which had just fired their coaches after less than four seasons. He brought up the corollary to Kentucky coach Mark Stoops, who was beloved there for exceeding expectations at a typically extremely challenging job. Stoops had done so well at Kentucky that he even came close to getting the Texas A&M job in 2023 -- the same one Lane tried and failed to get in the mix for -- but trustees reportedly killed the deal.

The source of the article referenced in the OP's link is that very article.

Also, may I add the following gem from his press conference yesterday...
Reporter: "Can you tell us who you sought advice from when you were deliberating whether you should take this job or not?"
Lane: "Coach Carroll told me he promised my dad he'd always look out for me and told me my dad would tell me to take the shot. And Nick Saban, he kinda coached at another conference school so I can't tell you exactly what he told me, but this is the best job in college football".
Congratulations, your beloved coach told him LSU is the best job in college football and that he'd be stupid to pass it up. No doubt in my mind he added other tidbits to Lane about wishing he had never left us. How does that feel?

quote:But that's the thing. It didn't have to come to that, they had a headstart. When they started talking Brian Kelly's job was still secure. Hell the original conversation Woodward had with him was about firing Sloan.
Then he talked to Nick Saban who repeated how his biggest regret in life is leaving LSU because it’s the #1 job in all of college football.
Instead of Florida being agressive from the get go, they thought they had leverage as being the only shot in town and started imposing stuff to Kiffin.

Any smart coach would until Stricklin is gone.

If there is anything we know about Lane, it's how truthful he is.

Weird that this post got lots of downvotes. I value Coach Saban's opinion since he's the GOAT. I agree with him that LSU is the best job in football

Considering this backs up everything Saban has said publicly over the past couple weeks, I believe Lane on this. Saban has also said repeatedly over the past decade or more that leaving LSU was the worst professional mistake of his career. He mentioned on Gameday when all the other assholes were saying Lane should stay at Ole Miss that he would have to rebuild his teams at Ole Miss through the transfer portal annually whereas at LSU he could simply supplement his teams through the transfer portal. LSU is the better job and literally anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves. Nobody in their right mind actually believes Ole Miss is a better job than LSU for a college football coach. Nobody.
