If LSU had competent leadership, and decided mid season that Kiffin was their man, the way to do this without putting Kiffin in the dilemma of taking the job or having a playoff run was pretty simple: don’t give in to the pressure from the fans to fire Kelly after the A&M game. Instead, you just leave him twisting in the wind, pretending nothing is going on, while you tell Kiffin the job is his if he will take it when his season concludes. Then, whenever that happens, you fire Kelly one day, and hire Kiffin the next.
It would have meant taking a bit of a hit in this year’s signing class, but you’d have your guy, and he’d have his chance to chase a title. The tampering would have pissed people off, but no one ever does anything about it (ask Chris Del Conte).
