Was there a point when the Birmingham Bowl was a bigger deal than it is now?

Years ago the NIT was the more important tournament than the NCAA tourney. Also there was more liters of Vodka in Russia than the amount of t of livestock for sustenance. A long long time ago. Just wondering if making it to Birmingham was as big of a deal as the Bluebonnet Bowl

Nah. It used to be played at Legion Field. And then back in the day they played the Hall of Fame (Shame) Bowl there. It is now the ReliaQuest/ Outback Bowl played in Tampa.

The only time games in Birmingham have mattered is when Bama and Auburn were too poor to have large enough stadiums on campus for the Iron Bowl.

I remember them old bluebonnet bowls in Houston had some pretty good matchups back in the day. Even for poor programs like Houston and Tulsa and Tulane. When the bowls mattered

I guess you have never heard of the Alabama Super 6.

The Bham Bowl has always been one of those bowls created for teams that shouldn't even be in a bowl. I doubt anyone watches it unless they are fans of the teams or stuck in front of a tv

Alabama played a lot of other games there besides the Iron Bowl.
Auburn finally got to play their Iron Bowl home games in Auburn in 1989. Alabama’s Iron Bowl home games were moved to Tuscaloosa in 2000.
