I have seen Big10 proposed 24 team and SEC has supported 16
is there an idea how the 16 team format would work?
ie all 16 start in the same round or byes for the top teams?
I would favor a 16 team playoff with the format of the SEC baseball torunament (also used by Big 10 basketball and others over the years)
Top 4 get a double bye the Quarters
5-8 Start in second round
9-16 play first round
Also the quarters should be on campus, is the plan when the bowl contracts expire to move the quarters to home games?

Read the orange part in the bottom left.
I’m still Partial to a playoff that involves each of the eight divisions having a championship, then letting each div play the division of the other conference it is beside.
Im partial to it because I want to SEC teams in the final and I think we want conference champ games.
Sec e avoids knocking the secw out of playoff in first round so you have secw play pac e while sec e plays a weakened ACC s.
You dont make it to play off without winning your 8 team div.
So let’s take Alabama’s season in this format.
They play all seven of their div.
They can play three of other div and two more from other conferences.
Eliminate the conference USA and sun belt games.
Make more money.

With Notre Dame getting in over Miami despite the head to head; it looks like 16 is the best number
1-8 get a 1st round home game; then advance based on seeding; highest ranked team always gets the lowest seed that advances

Why would we DROP A&M and KEEP Texas and Oklahoma?

What the B1G is proposing is fricking retarded, we dont need to play an extra game of #24 getting their shite pushed in and risking injuries to an actual contender just so everyone gets a participation trophy
I do get why Sankey wants to do it - would likely put in ~2 extra conference teams mosts years, but if you are all the way down at #16, you do not deserve a chance at a title
The current system is fine. Top 10 teams get to play for a title with a pity invite for G5/ACC. No one outside the top 10 will have a resume that is remotely worthy of a title.

Tv sets and championship histories.
More eyeballs will tune into Alabama vs Texas. Your Div is now eight teams large. Divide all that tv money by eight and you’ve got some serious cash.
I m just looking at the map. There are dozens of formations of these lines. I just picked one. Don’t get caught up in the teams, so much as the model.

I agree, culturally makes more sense for Texas to go west and aggie to go east, OU go make arguments for either
not really the point of this post though...

with the double bye format the top 12 get a home game and the top 4 only need to win 3 playoffs games to win the natty (which they earned with a top 4 finish reg season)

Despite only being 24, my vision is not great, and that pale orange doesn’t help lol.

No. What the big ten is proposing and what Sankey is proposing are BOTH retarded

I dont disagree, all I was pointing out was I see why Sankey would want 16, we usually have one or two programs sitting in that 13-16 range
the current playoff format is fine

I think the current 12 teams is more than enough. Eight is ideal but we aren’t going back. The bowl games need to take on their own tournament type setting, if they wanna still remain relevant in 2025 and beyond. Bowl eligibility needs to get serious again. Teams with 7 wins or more. That should be the threshold.
At this time of year, we pretty much know who won’t be playing for the whole thing. The bowl chairmen should be discussing a way to take the strongest teams that will NOT be in the playoff and set up a “NIT” type of situation for the remainder of the season around New Years. These geniuses should have done something about this years ago. But the tv big wigs and bowl committees and school admin folks were just fine getting fat off guaranteed money while the product on the field was terrible and the stands were a quarter filled

Hell. Let’s just start a round robin type tournament beginning with the first game.
12 teams is plenty. There is practically zero chance a team would win the National Championship from outside the top 12.

No matter what we/they do, there are always going to be teams, on the bubble, who should have gotten in, but don't.
