Why Hugh Freeze Failed at Auburn - CBS

Some of these quotes are unbelievable

quote:

Last season, for instance, he was spotted on the golf course multiple times on Sundays after losses the previous day.

quote:

On the Friday before a home game this season, Freeze again showed up to the golf course. As an Auburn booster told CBS Sports, "Freeze just came out to the golf course without clubs to watch guys play golf."

quote:

"The only problem we didn't foresee," one booster said, "is that he wanted to play golf way more than coach anymore!"

quote:

"From Day 1 of when they got there, I knew it'd be a shitshow," said a former Auburn staffer.

So we had two awful hirings in a row. Two guys who had better things to do in the fall than effectively run a Power Four football program. If we strike out a third time maybe its time to mothball Jordan-Hare.

Freeze opted to stick with Thorne despite multiple coaches and personnel staffers in the building pushing him to consider Washington State transfer Cam Ward. There was an internal push to go after Ward from the jump, but Freeze and quarterbacks coach Kent Austin were resistant. They didn't want to upset what they believed was a young, talented QB room that included four-star freshman Walker White and redshirt freshman Hank Brown.

quote:

In recent months, Senator Tommy Tuberville, a former Auburn head coach, has told a story to Auburn supporters that he had tried to convince Freeze to go after New Mexico State transfer Diego Pavia

quote:

On the Friday before a home game against Oklahoma last season, which turned out to be another loss, Freeze admitted to a source he blew it with Thorne and should have taken a transfer quarterback instead.

None of these panned out at all. Passing up on Cam Ward because you don’t want to upset your current room is weak.

I can definitely believe that. While refreshing every twitter/reddit/message board page waiting for the news to drop we learned that he had a standing 1:30 Sunday tee time and that the team is always off on Sundays.

I feel like they could at least have meetings on Sundays to watch the game film from the previous day to see what was done wrong or right and coach em up in the film room. Hell, we did that in HS on Saturdays every week. Then flush that game and start on a little film for the next opponent and start to give the players an idea of what the gameplan is gonna be.

I mean, hell, did players who needed treatment even get to come in on Sundays? I just cannot believe that there were no team meetings the day after the game to at least watch the film of the game. That seems like such a basic thing that all teams should be doing. Am I crazy?

JABA is hiring a coach that’s worse than the worst coaching hire in history

Every other professional job has performance metrics to be paid and stay employed. If he wasn't meeting his job requirements, we shouldn't pay his buyout. We should sue for back pay, too.

Ahh, yeah I've heard that too. Which is crazy because he had just come feom Colorado and Coach Prime where I have seen film if their practices and they were extremely soft there.

Let's be honest. If he could coach and recruit, no one would care about the golf. And Cohen shares blame for that NIL stance he took.

Agree 100%.

The rest of the league was going about it one way while Cohen decided Auburn had to be different and do it the "right" way. Which is crazy. There is no wrong way anymore.

Yep. The first name that popped to my mind.

However, they could be talking about Harsin staffers, but weren't they all fired before he got there? I doubt they would know much.

Caddy was the only one retained through that change, right?

Maybe they reached out to him for his opinion

Does anyone actually care that Freeze played golf in his free time? It has nothing to do with why we lost games. The QB spot, the OL, the scheme and play calling it what lost games. There's not a mystery or controversy with this one. Just a coach that didn't work out, that's how it ends most times.
