He did at lsu exactly what he did at ND. Won 9-10 games a year while never winning anything significant.

Year 3 at ND he was in the national title
Game. If Kelly didn’t that at LSU, he’d still have a job.

Everyone knew ND was going to get their asses kicked in that game.

That was a fraud team. They only had 1 good win that year (Rose Bowl Champion Stanford). Georgia, Oregon, A&M, South Carolina, LSU, etc. were better than them that year.

He averaged 3.5 losses per year over his 12 years at ND and 4/year in his 3.5 years at LSU. He is what he is.

Better question is what did LSU see in Brian Kelly before hiring him?

ND hasn't joined a conf in football for a reason. Much easier to control their schedule that way.

They thought that he was something that he wasn’t, a national championship caliber coach. He’s not a National Championship caliber coach, although I still think he’s a solid coach that will win 9-10 games almost every year. Someone above said he averaged 3.5 losses a year in his career, and that seems about right. That’s who he is. He is someone you hire if the program is a mess, as he’s a quality CEO, and he’ll turn you into a top 15-20 program. I understand where they’re coming from, though. Orgeron and Miles were idiots who acted like clowns, and they each won a Natty. Kelly, although he isn’t as charming, is much smarter and far more competent than either of them, so the logic suggested that he could win a Natty, too.

They, like most people, felt that the Notre Dame program was maxed out because of academic standards. I believed that for a while, too, until I actually looked into their program over the last 10-15 years. Looking back at their past recruiting rankings, Charlie Weis signed multiple classes that were around the top 5, he just couldn’t coach. Their 2026 class is #4 I think in the 247 composite with 3 5-stars and 22 total bluechip prospects. Looking at their past rankings, Kelly never had a class like that. There was talk when Kelly left that he was a lazy recruiter and that’s what held him back at Notre Dame, and that appears to be correct. Joel Klatt said last week that Freeman’s classes have an average prospect ranking of about 1 point higher than what Kelly had, and that his portal classes have been much better than what Kelly had.

Kelly took the job to retire, the "I'm here to win championships " was just coaches talk!

On top of that, when Kelly was at ND and they played a team with equal talent, he often got his doors blown off. Freeman has lost some close games to really good competition at ND, outside of that Northern Illinois fluke loss last year. And even though OSU beat them in the title game, his team didn’t give up.

Kelly coaching in that game last year’s natty and they would have folded similar to what we saw this past Saturday

He was asked if he would leave ND prior to the search. He said he would consider a school for an astronomical amount.

He played us. Then he played golf. Then he played the Jukebox at Superior the next day.

I wish I sucked at coaching college football. $53mm?

Kelly left Notre Dame right before the NIL and transfer portal took full effect. Once the NIL and unlimited transfers were made "legal" it was probably easier to win a NC at Notre Dame than LSU. Notre Dame has full control of their schedule, get the benefit of the doubt from the national media and CFP committee and he would have had a boat load of money at his disposal. He jumped ship a little too early.
