The problem with coaches today

Is that we have everybody thinking they deserve Nick Saban money and they have never won shite.
Saban built a multi billion dollar operation at Alabama and was worth every nickel.
People like Jimbo Fisher and Brian Kelly haven’ t done shite to deserve these contracts with huge buyouts. If I were negotiating with a coach there would have to be some goals he would have to hit for his pay to be guaranteed.
There is not a 10 million dollar a year coach in college football
Right now.

Cignetti is worth that to a perennial bottom feeder like Indiana

The problem is not the coaches. It's the ADs that agree to the contracts.

That is in fact not the problem

Saban was the exception but somehow became the rule.

Saban was actually under compensated. He changed the entire trajectory of the university.
Enrollment, academic standing, endowment.
Cognetti is also worth every penny to a place like Indiana. They have been one of the worst P4 teams in history.

Saban- hall of fame coach obviously but his tenure fricked up the sport. If he would have retired 5 years earlier, it might be different

Agents and AD's are more to blame.

St. Nick got St. Nick money because you couldn't OPENLY pay $20 Mil for a ball team.
I marvel at my school - Kentucky - still caught paying $9 Mil to Mark Stoops. And Indiana seeing all that and paying Cignetti about $12 Mil for eight more years.
Give me a $5 Mil coach and $5 Mil more in players. Let me see how that works out.

I agree with you that these coaches are milking their situations and some short term success to get stupid contracts....but if they are paying you, thats what the market is. If im an AD, I think I could be competent enough to let a coach walk and get a good coach to replace him.
The real incompetence is in the athletic departments and those signing off on these contracts(which im convinced are riddled with middlemen payoffs and straight up fraud).

Agents aren't to blame. They are doing their job. It's the ADs.

Elko’s pay-for-performance contract is the way. Lessons were learned.

What exactly do you want them to do?
It's a supply and demand issue.

You're only getting unproven, low end guys then.

This isn’t the fault of the coaches, this is the fault of ADs.
Things are worth what someone will pay for them, including football coaches.
The fact there are so many $10 million dollar coaches is proof there are $10 million dollar coaches.

You mean guys like Saban when he came to LSU?
Maybe a 10 million dollar a year contract for 10 years makes a guy lose the fire to be successful. Everybody is not like Saban.

Football programs bring in hundreds of millions of dollars a year. $10M is ultimately a drop in the bucket

In 2000, three coaches made
$1 million+...Bowden, Spurrier and Saban.
The Saban Dynasty made every AD become obsessed with finding the "next Saban"...and agents took full advantage of the desperation...creating absolutely ridiculous contract "norms"...which was the genesis of paying players millions today because of the optics of the multimillionaire coaches vs poor, starving players narrative.

There's always someone willing to pay it.
If you don't pay, you get left behind.
