We lost one of the most beloved figures in college sports on Thursday night, as Sister Jean Dolores Bertha Schmidt passed away at the age of 106, Loyola-Chicago announced.

The world came to know Sister Jean during the 2018 NCAA Tournament, when the Loyola-Chicago Ramblers captured hearts with their unforgettable run to the Final Four.

Serving as the team’s chaplain, Sister Jean became a national sensation for her faith, energy, scouting reports and genuine love for her players.

"Loyola University Chicago is greatly saddened to confirm the death of Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, BVM. This is a tremendous loss of someone who touched the lives of so many people. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts & prayers during this difficult time. Details to follow," the school announced late Thursday night.

This is the kind of stuff that makes college athletics great. She will be missed.

What was cool to see was a 100 year old woman connecting with 18-20 something kids. Kids of different socioeconomic backgrounds. She touched those kids souls, and they touched hers. She had a positive effect on those young peoples lives.

Chicago nuns always make me think of The Blues Brothers. Here's to you, Sister Jean.

Here at OU... we have the coach that launched Sister Jean to fame with a Final Four and Final Eight appearance for Loyola-Chicago.

It doesn't look like Porter Moser will likely ever have that kind of success again. But he and Sister Jean and those Loyola teams will never be forgotten.

Thanks Coach Moser... for introducing Sister Jean to the world.

And to Sister Jean for being one of the being someone who brought something special to college sports.

Loyola Chicago played in Dallas in the 1st and 2nd rounds of their Final 4 run in 2018 and I couldn't believe all the maroon and gold mufflers worn by so many people. My Vol buddy and I bought into a box because the 2 games in the 2nd round were Florida vs Texas Tech, and UC Loyola vs Tennessee. UF and UT both lost at the buzzer. There were tons of Loyola fans in Dallas.

God Bless Sister Jean!
