Ryan Williams...can’t help but notice he’s a very bad route runner

Don’t want to knock the kid. He made some key plays. But just from watching some of the game again I can’t help but notice he’s a very bad route runner. He just does not have much initial quickness off the LOS. And it’s very strange for a guy of his size and athleticism. I know he’s got a funk with drops and probably lacking some confidence. But for his future he’s got to commit to becoming much better in that regard. He just can’t get open a lot against decent coverage.

Some of those routes he comes off the line slow are by design.

The rest of what your said though is pretty on point. The hype really harmed him

Yeah after teams figured him out game 5 or so last season he has really been quite underwhelming. Hopefully he figures some stuff out and he can play up to the level of his talent.

It doesn't help that his hands are basically frying pans. Even when he catches the ball it's with his forearms and chest.

He's worried about hurting his nails...

Yeah, I see that even when he catches it sometimes he kind of bobbles it before securing and making his moves. A lot more often than any other star receiver I've ever watched.

I guess it's fortunate that Bama has so many receiving options and an explosive guy like RW doesn't have to be the focal point of the offense. So opposing defenses may be lulled to sleep a little bit only for him to go off at some point during the game.

That's my hope anyway.

My 14 year old said the same. "Why isn't he attacking the ball with his hands. That's how balls bounce off of you."

Still, an elite talent that I am glad is wearing Crimson. We have a great mix of WR talent.

The half hearted effort to block last night in the first half drove me nuts. I know he's not a big guy but in the SEC, you HAVE to block sometimes as a WR. Not being very effective due to your size is one thing, not trying or giving it a half hearted effort is unacceptable.

I think he would really benefit from a long chat with Devonta Smith on the habits and little things you have to do to be the best WR out there. They're similar size/build, so Williams could probably relate. Smitty worked like a maniac in the offseason and RW would do well to emulate Smitty in every way possible.

The broadcast team in the first half showed him making poor to weak attempts at blocking guys. He spent a lot of time on the bench in the first half. I was hoping Germie would have more touches.

Yeah, the broadcast team FAILED to show the down field BLOCK after he whiffed earlier in the play.

Ryan Williams didn't let those plays take him out of the game mentally. He kept on pushing.

Having a QB that can get him the ball helps.

Good to have out there and good after the catch. When he catches it.

Made some key grabs yesterday after the drop. Thankfully we scored on that drive.

Kid that dropped the TD for UGA will think about that one for a long time.

He’s pretty awesome with the ball in his hands, he’s been pretty mediocre in every other aspect. I’m rooting for him though. Seems like a nice human. Never thought he gave up. The secondary block on the Bernard screen secured the first down even after the complete whiff on the initial.

He has a lot of work to do and that’s okay.
Lottie Brooks is going to be real nice in the future

He let the hype get to him for sure.

I don't know what the issue is, but I saw a stat where he has more drops than any other WR in the SEC going back to last year.

It's such a shame, because he's an elite playmaker.

From everything I've heard he's a super hard worker, always taking notes in the meetings, really good personality. He's a good kid. He's just gotta get out of his head and catch the damn ball.

The fans need to stop knocking him too. I'm sure he would've caught that ball 99% of the time in practice. Had he caught it last night, he would've been our leading receiver, gotten over 100 on the game, and he'd be living up to the hype.

Maybe Devonta should start with introducing him to the Juggs machine & show him how to use it
