Mike Gundy is a good coach. He has shown he can have success. In 22 seasons at OK St he had 13 seasons with 8 wins or more and 8 seasons with 10 or more wins.

He went 170-90, a 65% winning clip. OK St is a perennial .500 program. They currently have an all time .523 winning percentage. They were under .500 when he took over.

The wheels fell off last year going 3-9. But he was 10-3 the year before. Was that 3-9 record because he suddenly forgot how to coach? Or did they whiff on some portal players? Or do they not have enough money to compete in the new NIL world? Whatever it was, it blows my mind he was fired after one bad season and 3 games.

He would be an upgrade in Gainesville and Auburn for sure. Maybe in Columbia and Lexington too.

And finally, is Oklahoma State about to find themselves in the pit of despair like Auburn, who also fired a coach who had a better winning percentage than the program?

I always thought he was a good coach who elevated that program. Had a knack for finding talent.

But losing 11 of the last 12 is going to disqualify him from major programs. Tough sell to fire another coach and hire that.

Reading up on it, it sounds like lack of NIL money is what killed OK St. If true, they are going to struggle to find a better replacement.

T. Boone kicking the bucket was the worst thing to happen to both Okie Lite and Gundy

I get why they did it, but yeah, this could set them back. Maybe they get lucky with a new guy, but it could just be a stepping stone job.

I expected them to run that conference, too.

I think alot of folks feel the same way. That once a really good coach like Gundy had burned out (and possibly burned some bridges) that Stillwater’s not exactly a destination job. They may becoming southern Nebraska for the foreseeable future

If Beamer had a lick of sense he would drop his pay to 50g and use the rest to hire Gundy as OC and Saban as DC

If college football were like NASCAR and every team had the same conditions…

I believe Mike Gundy would easily be a top 20 coach

Gundy has a better all time winning percentage than Napier, Stoops, Beamer and Freeze. Gundy is also the only one out of that bunch who has won a P5 conference championship and a NY6 bowl game.

Based just on results, it is easy to argue Gundy is the best coach out of that bunch.

It's not true; at least it's not the entire picture.

What is the entire picture?

This is from last season.

quote:

Gundy, who is set to begin his 20th season as head coach at Oklahoma State next Saturday, said that Oklahoma State spent around $2.7 million on NIL deals for players last season. "We've been competing against teams that are paying a ton of money and we're not paying a ton of money," Gundy said. "We only paid $2.7 million last year. There were 25 teams that paid over $15 million. We know that for a fact and it may be more than that. Those days are gone. Those are history. In my opinion, you're not gonna be able to compete anymore on a low budget. You just won't be able to do it. You won't have any players."

According to AI, Oklahoma State spent $2.4 million this year. Not for one player, their entire roster.

In his prime sure
But he’s far past his prime
2025 Gundy gave up 69 points to Oregon’s and lost to Tulsa

Still an upgrade to Gaypier not sure about it the rest

Gundy made his career on finding players that others missed and developing them.

He also had a streak of picking great coordinators, and then that streak ended badly, coinciding with a seventh-year returning QB who completely crashed and burned.

Gundy had to be given the chance to come back this year and right the ship, but it was clear that wasn't happening.

Kind of funny that Pickens spent all that money in his life to build the program and now he’s gone and no one in the family cares.
