How does Tennessee get away with the 1967 claim?

All the talk of Auburn's claimed titles but at least they were undefeated in those years. Tennessee has 1967 displayed in the stadium and claims it.

Tennessee finished that season 9-2 with a loss to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, and a #2 ranking in both polls.

Both the AP and Coaches polls were still excluding bowl games.

The Wichita Eagle - Wichita, Kansas (and carried in other wire service newspapers on the same day, likely)
Thu, Dec 21, 1967

Not the AP. Not going to look it up, but I believe the AP counted the bowl in 1965, and didn't count the bowl in 1966. That's how Notre Dame won the NC with a tie and perfect Alabama's thrashing of Nebraska in the Bowl didn't count. I believe they started counting in 67 or 68...but I'm thinking 67.

The AP counted bowls in 65 but went back to excluding them in 66 and 67 for some reason. They started counting them in 68.
Coaches poll didn't start counting them until 74.

That's so dumb to count the bowl for one year but not the next.

Even a lot of Tennessee fans readily admit that it’s embarrassing that we claim ‘67. 1940 isn’t much better.

Champion was named before the bowl games. Top 10 were:

USC - 9-1
UT - 9-1
OU - 9-1
Indiana - 9-1
Notre Dame - 8-2
Wyoming - 10-0
Oregon State - 7-2-1
Bama - 7-1-1
Purdue - 8-2
Penn State - 8-2

Tennessee's loss was in their Opener by 4 points to then #8 UCLA in LA. They won their last 9 games

USC lost in the next to last week of the season to an unranked Oregon State team in Corvalis.

Oklahoma lost in the 3rd game of the season to Unranked Texas in Dallas. They were not ranked until the 7th week of the season.

Notre Dame had 2 regular season losses (one to USC).

Wyoming was undefeated, but their last game of the season was a 2 point win over UTEP.

Indiana lost in the next to last game to an unranked Minnesota team.

Bama had 1 loss (to Tennessee) and a tie with Florida State...they also won 2 of their last 3 regular season games by 4 and 3 points over unranked teams.

Oregon State had 2 regular season losses to unranked teams and a tie to UCLA.

Purdue had an 8 point loss at home to Oregon State.

Penn State lost 2 of their first 3 games to unranked Navy in Maryland and to UCLA at Home.

So...that is how they claim it, I guess. It was a crazy season, and there was no clear-cut championship caliber team at the end of the regular season. I'm guessing they didn't name the NC after the bowl games until 1968 because that is when Notre Dame started playing in bowl games again...
