Everything was decided by losing to LSU in that first game

Ah, Root had been cruising of late. We would have lost our minds had we started Gage.

He had two good outings after losing 5 of his previous 6 starts and one was against a severely overmatched Creighton team. I wouldn't say cruising.

He have up 4 earned in 2 innings in his only appearance against LSU and was coming off of a game where he had zero strikeouts in 3.1 innings

I heard Dave say something to the effect that they weren’t going to tinker with the starting lineups with pitchers because he did that in the past and it wound up biting them in the arse, not a quote but it didn’t work out.

Correct but his last couple games leading up to CWS games were solid.

No, we still only scored a single run in game 1.

LSU would have scored a run or more on Gage.

Time to move on to ...... football.

His last 4 games heading into Omaha were the two I mentioned, a 3 inning appearance against Tennessee where he gave up 7 hits and 2 earned runs, and a good outing against Creighton. Nothing in those 4 appearances said start him over Root

This.

In ‘09 Cal St Fullerton pitched their freshman who was hot with like a sub 2 ERA his previous 6 starts for game 1 against us, resting their Friday starter for a game 2, and we smoked him.

If he pitched Gage and we lost it would’ve been 100x worse than if he pitched Root and we lost.

Not just to us as fans, which doesn’t matter, but to the team. The team believed in Root as the Friday guy. You tinker with that, the team (and Root) question you.

We had our horses. We had a team that could win it all. We lost to LSU. It sucks, but there weren’t any coaching decisions that cost us. We didn’t execute. End of story.

And no, game 1 didn’t decide the CWS. The bottom of the 9th in game 2 against LSU did.

Though it didn’t turn out like I wanted, I really enjoyed this season and look forward to next season. Dave is doing a great job.
