Dawg friends,
Just needed an outlet to brag on my kid. My daughter just found out tonight she got accepted into the University of Alabama PH.D program. UA and UGA are the top two programs in the country for her field. She applied at 5 programs including UGA and received interviews with 4 ( all but UGA…dang Dawgs don’t know what they are missing).
Anyway, she will start grad school at 21 years old, graduated high school early and will finish with a PH..D at 26-27 and likely debt free. She financed all her undergraduate through scholarships and part time work. Grad school paid with scholarship and stipends. Hardest damn working kid I’ve ever been around. So proud of her.
Thanks for listening. Hard for me to say this …..”high tide!”

That's awesome! Any wisdom you can drop for the rest of us on how you raised her to do this?

That's amazing!
You must be proud of her, but don't forget to take some credit for yourself.
Just make sure her allegiance stays with the Dawgs.

Not sure how this will hit with some folks…but I’ll try. It’s by the grace of God and a tremendous amount of sacrifice.
My wife has homeschooled our kids since kindergarten (son a senior in highschool). For the first 8-10 years of schooling she worked third shift at the hospital every weekend and one day during the week and then would school the kids because we needed the income. As I made more money the past five years, she was she was eventually able to quit work and stay at home schooling. Our household income last year was $125k including my commissions, so we are by no means rich. Our family vacations were wherever our kids were playing ball that weekend. No boats, sports cars, or fancy toys. My wife drives a 15 year old car and my truck will be paid off next month. I golf and hunt with my son, coach all their sports..that’s about it.
They grew up knowing we didn’t have much money and if they wanted something they would have to find a way to make it happen. We stayed involved in their lives, showed them lots of love (sometimes tough love), and tried to set an example of being a productive member of society. I think the key was not being hypocritical, living out what we were telling them. They believe what they see more than they hear…talk is cheap. We talk about the sacrifices we made/make openly to hold them accountable, but tell them we don’t begrudge making those sacrifices, it was what we signed up for as parents. We tell them “we hold up our end of the deal, you hold up yours”. Don’t be an entitled brat and remember whose kids you are. Make us proud.
That’s a brief overview. Hope it helps in some way.

Congrats! We have similar stories. Both my kids graduated from UGA, although I think the getting in was one of the hardest parts. My daughter went straight through, getting her masters at UGA as well.
Kids are as hard working as ever. Especially the ones who were raised to work hard.

Very cool. Watching your kids excel and exceed your own accomplishments is the greatest joy in this life.

That’s impressive. We sure love to be proud out our kids, don’t we?
