Got us an R1 designation, pumped the endowment, let the AD pump up baseball (womp womp) and basketball (yay) funding
All in all he handled it well. Wonder if we loop in Karr from UAH

That would be my #1 pick. Incredible Engineering Dean when he was at UA and Engineering is a good way to get more research money. Maybe we can siphon off some funding that UAB gets for medical and use it at UA

Dr. Bell has done a great job for UA, gonna be some big shoes to fill for sure!

UA needs a medical school with a research hospital and I imagine it will happen when DCH inevitably is about to go tits up and there has to be a state intervention. I think it is probably time to start working the politicking on that because UAB should have never been made into a separate university. It hampers our research prestige because UA has half or more of what makes a top research university and UAB has the other 40-50%.
Also, I second Dean Karr returning to Tuscaloosa. I liked him when he was here. He would be a good advocate for improving our STEM bonafides like Bell (another engineering professor) started.

We had close to 7,000 undergrad engineering students when Karr was Dean. Once he left those numbers skyrocketed downwards even though it has gone up a little bit over the past couple years.

Agreed, but it makes sense that it's in Birmingham since that is the state's largest city and we have a system university there. I wish we would have kept the UA logos on the buildings and Dr. Jackets instead of letting UAB take that. It's still considered the University of Alabama school of Medicine so I'm taking credit for us on that.

Dr. Witt was even better. It seemed like the university boomed under his leadership in all areas

Need to open a Research and Engineering campus in Huntsville like Auburn and Georgia Tech have. Need to have a presence in the "Fastest growing and most technical area in Alabama"....... getting left behind.

Ding ding ding ding. I have to drive by both the AU and the GTI building every day for work and actually have townhalls/meetings in the AU building a few times a year. It makes me sick

Doesn’t UAH qualify for UA engineering campus in Huntsville?

When I was a student, all the locals told me DCH stands for "Don't Come Here"

I read in the release enrollment is now over 40k. It has more than doubled since my time in late 90s/early 00s.

Considering they turned the old Bryce land into a liberal arts campus, I have doubts we ever get a med school in Tuscaloosa

UA is not going to get a medical school again. The state gave that to UAB.
Posted on 1/15/25 at 5:45 pm to Granola
UAB shouldn’t exist and I ain’t just talking about their football program.

The dental, medical, optometry etc is all at uab. Most states med schools are in the largest city. I am no fan of UAB either

Dr Bell has a background in engineering. Wonder if UA BOT goes for someone in the STEM area, Business or Law
