Question: Is this NIL & Portal situation just leading up to an eventual NFL farm league?

I’m hearing this being thrown around the coffe table a lot this past two weeks. I really don’t have an issue one way or another as it works in baseball, basketball was gutted decades ago too.

Thoughts?

Unless it's regulated much more tightly, yes, you're on track.

The high revenue earning sports will need to separate from non-revenue earning sports. Football must separate. Men's basketball, baseball?

So an NFL team is just going to buy a college's FB team? The entire athletic department? I am not sure how that would work as there are around 120 teams who play big boy FB and some have little worth for an NFL franchise to want to buy them. All the 4 major conferences have a team no one would want.

Short answer to your question: yes. It’s sad.

I see your point and that defiantly makes for discussion? What I have been asked to consider in retrospect is another year of high school stars exiting with 3 year general diplomas and $1.5 million in cash before ever throwing a football in a college game leading the way. And on and on (remember this is just the beginning of all this).

Why would the NFLnot start a farm program as the facade of student athletics and amateur sports has all but faded into obscurity not that athletics and education really ever mixed much?

The nfl doesn’t want these guys until they’re 3 years removed from HS. They like things just the way they are.

They have had a free farm program since the NFL was founded. Why would they pay for a minor league when it is already free?

Because soon it might be extremely profitable to make a real one for the listed reasons presented?

Exactly. The nfl is sitting pretty, they don’t pay a dime of operating expenses it takes to train, develop, coach or produce an nfl rookie player. The colleges do that for them. So why would they change anything?

NFL farm league would be better than what it is right now.

It’s always been an “NFL farm league”. Just because they are getting paid out in the open now hasn’t changed anything.

Look at the numbers. Teams are recruiting pretty much the same as they have for decades. No team all of a sudden jumped from being out of the top 15 into being a recruiting monster and vice versa. NIL didn’t change a damn thing other than your own insecurities about 18 year olds making more money in one year than you will make in a lifetime.

No. I can see the NFL allowing 18 year old to enter the draft. That would cause CFB to move.

I think you are on the right track. The way things have changed so quickly due to the atrocious NIL and the relaxed transfer portal, college football will become an NFL farm league whether the transformation is a formalized deal or a continuation of the chaotic scene we have now. Either way money will be the main factor.

We're already there and have been there for years. You know the NFL has to love that they have a minor league farm system that they don't have to pay for.

It will destroy college sports. Well on its way now.
