Sadly, the Marshall situation could easily happen to any SEC team

I know many SEC fans - myself included - sometimes think that since we're the best conference in the country that we're beyond reproach, but the Marshall situation could easily happen to any SEC team, regardless of what team we support.
At some point, the NCAA has to address the serious issues with NIL and the transfer portal because players shouldn't be allowed to just jump ship without some type of repercussion. It's hard to understand how a program like Marshall can go out and have an outstanding season, win the Sun Belt Conference and can't play in a bowl game because almost the entire roster decided to leave and follow their coach.
I don't know the answer, and yes, I agree that the NCAA is powerless, but at some point, something has to be done. It's Marshall today, but the reality is, it could happen to any team in the country next year.
This is not what college football is supposed to look like.

At least make players in the playoffs wait.
Or they have to change the window.

NCAA has no power to do anything. The only way to fix it is a break off league that can come to some type of agreement on rules and enforcement.
NCAA literally has no ability to enforce anything at this point.

Context for the uninformed, please: what's the Marshall situation? I assume you're referencing Marshall University...

Screw it just ditch the bowls and make the playoffs like FCS. Otherwise we're just gonna have this if nothing can be done which I think we might be sunk trying to push back on anything

Any player that voluntarily enters the transfer portal should be required to sit out a complete season and lose that year of eligibility.

They might not have been able to field a team at certain positions. Several positions probably without having guys play positions they never even practiced.

Programs will start firing the coach after the last game.

Scholarships becoming more like contracts may be the only way. That has a legal can of worms I’m sure also.

Could have easily happened to Alabama had Saban announced his retirement before the Rose Bowl. Imagine having to opt out of a CFP game because you had 35 portal entrees.

It did to LSU during the coaching transition
We had Kirklin playing QB
Between opt outs for those going pro and first year of portal LSU had a decimated roster.
Look what happened to Fla St last season with pro opt outs and the mismatch with UGA it was.
Penn St backup QB has entered portal and won't participate in playoffs.

quote:Not sure how that helps. If I’m not mistaken Coach changes open the portal process earlier.

Yeah. All it could take would be an error by a pilot, air traffic controller, or a maintenance person.

Yep, fixed term contracts and direct revenue sharing with a player's association will be on the way in the next few years.
5 years ago, I would have absolutely hated this idea. But anything is better than the current structureless shitshow.

Also what I thought this thread was about when I opened it up

I agree but not in this case. Marshall's head coach left to take the Southern Miss job so, even under the previous rules, players would have been allowed to transfer.

Marshall won the Sun Belt Conference, and their coach got poached by an in-conference team. Over 40 players entered the portal to follow him.
Marshall doesnt have enough players to play their bowl game after winning a conference title.

That's really sad...
College football is broken. I hope it gets fixed. It can't go on like this forever...can it?

Is it really a suprise that when the Government gets involved or interjects itself into any industry it immediately goes to hell.

Sport has been on a slippery slope for years.
Nobody used to sit out the bowl games and fans cheered when they won the toilet bowl. I remember when Auburn was triumphant over Larry Johnson after people tried to say we couldnt stop him. That was a good ending to the season.
Then McCaffery and others started sitting out. "But the bowl game is meaningless" they said. It wasn't meaningless to me when we won, but we have to be okay when our top corner chooses to sit out in a bowl game we eventually we lose in.
Now the games dont have to necessarily be meaningless anymore. Players on CFP teams have to get in the portal before spots are taken, especially those that need to strike while the iron is hot.
Marshall isnt really relevant to the SEC as they are only half-serious about football but let's be real, the game is a joke.
