LSU-Arkansas 1999
We can call it like it is: Anything before 2000 in the SEC can be known as BS (Before Saban) and everything since AS (After Saban).
A 2-8 LSU Team who just fired their head coach prevented top 25 Arkansas from achieving a 9 win season. Arkansas has only won 9 games 6 times since 1998. Interim Hal Hunters Tigers beat Top 25 Arkansas 35-10.
Our next game was Coached By Nick Saban and the rest is history. 9 year old Tarpon08 remembers it was a chilly afternoon but the Manda Dog at the game was spicy!

Touché. Could have been so much worse.

Some of us had football programs and championships before then.

Why yes LSU was one of them.

We won a national championship the year before and almost win it nearly every year back then but we actually had legit juggernauts to contend with nationally like Spurrier and UF, Bowden and FSU and those loaded Nebraska teams.
Way more dominant teams than today's landscape.
No one looks at Texas, Oregon and this year's editions of Bama and UGA and shudders at the thought of possibly playing them. The thought of playing Spurrier and UF every year was just as daunting as playing those prime Saban Bama squads. They were posting monster offensive numbers for those times every year.

In a year in which the coach was fired, players were suspended for everything from breaking team rules to purse snatching and improper conduct with an agent, LSU hit the field like a team with something to prove.

You've played FSU one whole time in the NCG in '98, and you've played Nebraska three times - once in 2016. You played Miami three times, and Texas & Oklahoma none in the 70s, 80s, 90s, or 00s.
You got to play a down Georgia all through the 90s, an unbuilt South Carolina, and an Alabama that was more manageable for you to beat for 30 years past Bear Bryant and prior to Nick Saban. The team that plays in the NCG is always going to be really good, and now you have a much, much stronger SEC to get through and playoff games.

Until another Saban arrives or Kirby regains his Saban style mojo, there are no teams this year that i look at and go holy crap how is anyone going to beat that team? Sark and Texas haven't even played anyone yet so am not ready to anoint them as that team.
I'm talking about this year and even last year as well. Saban leaving and Kirby looking mortal again created a lot more parody in addition to the NIL.

purse snatching
Let's put more context into this: our star WR snatched a purse, and then was chased down by a band member (a tuba player at that).
That's how bad that team was. Our star WR wasn't fast enough to outrun a tuba player

Kirby was never Sabanesque. He's the SEC's Dabo.

You can have BS and AS, but the modern era is when SEC teams starting winning nearly every title, which is 2006.

This is crazy talk.

I remember the 06 National Championship game well. Florida was a huge underdog and everyone was picking Ohio State to win handily. Tim Tebow said hold my beer! LOL!

Always hated playing a Houston Nutt team. He had LSU's number.
I'll never forget being on the sidelines in '07, watching Darren McFadden run all over us in Tiger Stadium. It was quite demoralizing. But, we still won the Natty that year, so

Definitely a lot more parody, plus more parity.

I wouldn't even worry about those teams this year. I'd just worry about Arkansas

I disagree.
Dabo's success was based on elite QB's with second level team talent. I don't say second level as a crack... I instead mean that those clemson teams have "good enough" talent to be championship level with an elite QB. Deshaun Watson for one title, Trevor Lawrence for the other.
Many teams use this formula. LSU had that in 2019 with Joe Burrow. Auburn with Cam Newton.
Bama's formula was different. It was about a talent advantage across the board. Most of the time they had good but not elite QB's when they won titles.
UGA followed that formula. Stetson Bennett was a good college QB, but he was never elite. Before UGA the last non-Bama team to succeed with that formula was maybe Les Miles championship at LSU in 2007.
The only other formula that's been used aside from the Saban/Smart "huge team talent" or the "elite QB with good team talent" was Michigan. They used the "super-senior Covid path" which was only available for a couple years and is now no longer possible.
