I see a lot of post about people bashing the 4-2-5 defense. Nick Saban literally ran a 4-2-5 his last five years at Alabama. We ran a 4-2-5 last year and we had a very good defense. The issue with our new defensive coordinator is he’s trying to get pressure with 3 to 4 rushers and not blitz. There were numerous times last night we only had three down linemen. He’s using having young corners as an excuse to not blitz but leaving them out to dry to cover for 12 seconds exposes them even worse. His defensive philosophy will look good against Tennessee and pass happy teams but will struggle mightily in the physical games. Against Vanderbilt we should have blitzed the edges all night long to force them to run inside. At one point yesterday on a third and nine we had Tim Keenan and Damon Payne as two of the three rushers. Wommack can get better but he’s going to have to start blitzing and create havoc on the quarterback. We made Beck look foolish with pressure. ROLL TIDE!!!!!

That’s the big defense. When our DC were struggling we always had Saban there to step in and make the adjustments for Goulding. I won’t pretend to know CKD defensive knowledge but he seems to be pretty hands off. If Kane cannot back out of a plan that’s not working and pivot this team is going to lose a few more games Vanderbilt and South Carolina were must wins IMO to take pressure off when we have to play at TN and at LSU. They have explosive offenses. I think fans would have even felt better if we had seen him making any kind of adjustments the last 6 qtrs but he literally kept running the same thing time and time again.

They had some great blitz schemes in that first half against Georgia. They also showed some of the most sound defensive fundamentals I've seen from Bama since before Golding. I was very excited to see that. I can't really understand what has happened since. Yesterday it looked like Alabama had no idea that Vanderbilt runs the option, as though they hadn't watched any film.

The lack of adjustments as Georgia and Vandy went up and down the field on our defense is unacceptable

Exactly. We looked like a competent defense when we blitzed against Georgia. As soon as we stopped that game turned around.

Yes and o really like DeBoer and honestly believe he is the right man to run this program with his style of coaching. Don’t get me wrong I HATE the undisciplined play of players talking trash and losing their temper and hopefully behind doors that gets fixed, BUt why has not one media member asked him and specifically Womack why did we quit blitzing, why aren’t you making adjustments when what you’re doing is not working? If these types of questions make him uncomfortable then maybe he is too soft to lead the program.

The one thing that stood out last night I saw was instead of tackling the runner in the 2nd half our DBs and others as well seemed to focus on stripping the ball out and they gained more yards from it.

Against UGA they were doing a great job tackling especially open field.

Saban ran a 3-3-5, not a 4-2-5

We also went into a 2-4-5 nickel sometimes

Right now we're running a 4-2-5 without the DL to really run it. 4-2-5 is dependent on the DL to create pressure whereas 3-3-5 will pull more from the edge, with confusion on who you're sending (since you usually strip an ILB to go from 3-4 to 3-3). Keenan and Oatis for instance are more run oriented than pass oriented lineman.

You’ve never seen Saban run a 3-3-5. We were in nickel 90% of the time and that had four guys with their hand in the dirt.

Hand in the dirt =/= 4-2-5

An edge in a 3-4 is different than an edge in a 4-3.

Probably useful as a comparable but here's a summary of how the 2-4-5 and the 3-3-5 can vary simply by personnel ; LINK

Alabama under Saban in recent years, and Kirby, use the MINT front which is a 3-4 offshoot and essentially a 3-3-5 LINK

I get what you are saying but it’s technically not a true 3-3-5. Our issue against vandy was at times we had three down line with at least four yards separating them from the next lineman.
