I think this statement would be hard to substantiate, as it works a lot on assumptions. All of y'all know what it's like to be assumed a racist for no proven reason. Additionally, the lack of people who would meet your approval waving the flag is partly due to the fact that most people just don't wave any flag, and that it's easier (unfortunately) to NOT wave the flag then try to convince everyone who saw you that you're not a racist. Political correctness has all but won this battle (unfairly). We need to stop bringing our Southern brothers down with assumptions of racism. It was hard enough to say "I voted for McCain" without following it with "but I'm not a racist."

Technically the square battle flag was carried by the Army of Northern Virginia. The rectangular flag was the navy jack as well as carried by the Army of Tennessee. However, as the war went on and units moved from one theater to the other, there was a mixing of shapes of the flags - especially as units transferred from the AoT to AoNV following Chickamauga and Chattanooga.

Good point. I wasn't totally clear. The Fighting Tigers were Louisiana Troops in the Army of Northern Virginia. The flag they carried was square- and rather large- 52 inches across with border, if I recall correctly.

I am absolutely certain that I saw three Confederate Flags held up by Ole Miss fans in the stands of the Cotton Bowl. There is no doubt that I saw this during the telecast.

I was surprised to see it . . . that's why it made such an impression.

The style of the Confederate Flag was the common version that is actually a Confederate Navy flag: it's shaped like a rectangle. It has a red background and the blue X that goes from end to end of the whole flag contains white stars.

Did anybody else see this?

PS I took the time just now to read about the University Greys at Gettysburg and I note that they did fight heroically there and all were either killed, captured or wounded.

PSS The Louisiana Tigers at Gettysburg had a more distinguished record, because they actually took Cemetary Hill on July 2nd. It is true that they withdrew during the evening, but, they DID take that position, and they were the only ANV unit to do so.
