Why on game day of a brand new season does our field look like it is at end season level ? Cal comes in next week and it should be fresh and vibrant instead of faded and washed out.

I assume for similar reasons that my grass is dry and brown right now. Lack of rain

They totally redid the field in the off-season. Dug the whole thing up, removed all the drainage piping Dye had laid down in 1981 and put in a new drainage system. Then they graded the field and laid new sod.

It could be they are using a new species of sod. I dunno.

Was down there for the scrimmage two weeks ago, and it looked better tonight than then.

Our grass is never the bright green you see on some fields. I believe it has to do with the rye sod we use which supposedly has a denser root system for less slipping.

Least thats what I was told decades ago, could be an urban myth

We’ve got millions and millions in our budget but can’t water the grass?

They probably scalped the hell out of it, and will shoot liquid fertilizer through the irrigation this week so it looks glorious for the nationally televised game this coming weekend

I hope so. It may have just been the tv reception because when I switched over to the aTm game their field looked as bad. Just seems like the mid field logo the end zone markings would just pop and look bright and appealing instead of faded out and meh.

Well, it's just my theory, I haven't talked to any of the guys I know on the grounds crew. But, 419 Bermudagrass is a hybrid that is able to take a very high nitrogen load. It has been hot as fuk the last couple of weeks. To get the grass the length suitable for football, you have to cut it short. And it would be hard to cut it that short 2 weekends in a row and still have it really pretty green. My guess is that they scalped it last week because the game wasnt gonna be seen by that many people. And they will have it lookin beautiful for the Cal Berkeley game, because it will be nationally televised

They should use the water from the river that runs underneath JHS.
