O still looks like its stuck in the mud. Relying on power and pounding type of play calling and the OL isn't cohesive yet....its good that we will play them early in the year IMO
The biggest thing the Wisc game will tell us is the level of preparedness of the Staff and starters and the new starters ability to play in a hostile environment. I'm not worried about Milroe but its early and Camp Randall isn't a cake walk.

They probably spent the entire off-season prepping for us.
I still laugh at how LSU struggled with them back in January.

The difference between them and Texas the last two years is deep threats on offense. Texas was loaded with major offensive talent like Worthy and Mitchell. Perhaps Wisconsin was holding back some last night but I don’t see a deep threat on their offense.

That type of game would be VERY good fo rthe Alabama D. Two weeks later we face a team in UGA that the Saban 2-gap system was designed to stop. This new (to Alabama) 1-gap system will reguire the Mike LB to attack the LoS. He will have to have good film study to read where the point of attack will be and arrive there about the same time as the RB.
1-gap is what our DL coach knows and coaches best (see what his DL did when he was at MS State). But if the Mike LB is catching blocks 2 yards down field UGA will destroy him.

He’ll do fine. Kyle Field last year was a much tougher environment.

Weird thing to be worried about before the first game of the new season while returning a playoff QB who was a few plays away from taking us to the championship.

Wisconsin did not look good, but there were two prevailing thoughts from Fickell after the game: WMU played deep thirds almost the entire game, so Wisconsin relied on quick timing routes and methodical drives. Only punted once, but the the flip side is Fickell felt the drives were TOO methodical. If you're putting together 16-17 play drives and coming away with FG attempts (one of which was missed), you're putting yourself in a dangerous spot.
Defensively, everything looked fine for the most part, exception being a near 9-minute drive by WMU in the second quarter. Nothing out of the ordinary - they got a couple chunk plays out of RBs and TEs leaking out after staying in-line to block for a couple seconds. Immensely frustrating.
You won't find many, if any, Wisconsin fans that feel we are even close to Alabama, but that game can be summed up as methodical and boring. Neither team had many possessions.

A 1-gap scheme allows the defense to be much more aggressive from the snap. Each defender is assigned one gap and can attack that gap straight from the snap without as much reading and reacting. It gives the ability explode through the line.
In the 2-gap scheme, defenders have to be strict and patient. They have to wait and read the direction of the play before they commit to their actions. That extra second needed to read and react slows down the pass rush, making it easier for the offensive line in pass protection. When you are playing against an elite QB such as Carson Beck you want to pressure him as much as possible. You do not want to give him extra time to find an open receiver.
Also, the 2-gap can leave the inside linebackers vulnerable to being blocked by guards who reach them on the second level.
