OR is an all-time copout from a reporting perspective, but I've never really seen a scenario, at least for first string, where the guy listed first in the OR category wasn't the starter.

Thoughts?

Only thing that sticks out to me like a sore thumb is we are going to need our youngsters in the secondary to grow up in a hurry, and I actually think injuries at safety would be more detrimental than injuries at CB. I think our backups at corner, although young, are closer talent wise to the starters than the backups at safety. On the positive side, I think that's the best front 7 in the county when it's all said and done

Wommack's system will be easier for the young guys to learn than Saban's. Saban's system was the best if you had veteran guys running it (or savants like Minkah), but if you had guys that were not experienced it could look pretty bad.

That’s a deeeeeeep DL group. I’d have to imagine at least one of those guys is going to break out and have a really good year. Same with the Wolf position. Unproven but I’m confident at least one of those guys will end up being a dude this year.

Agree with you at safety. Can’t lose any key contributors there.

This team could/should kick major arse this year. I’ve been tempering expectations all offseason; no more. I’m ready to see these guys on a mission and dominate week in week out. Time to channel their inner-Jon Allen and go ape shite.

We are thin a safety and need those CBs to pick things up quick so they can play other roles

I'd love to see Downs and Amos on that list. It is what it though, the new life a CFB.

Deshawn Jones is experienced. I have high hopes for him.

I’m very curious and excited to see Keon Keeley on the field.

I don't agree with the DB "depth" argument other than they don't have experience at Bama. We have 14 DBs on the depth chart, last year Saban had 15 and in most years he had 11 or 12. If any one's starting safety or corner goes down whether it is here, UGA, Ohio State, the NFL in any given year you are going to have trouble. Four of the Six potential DB starters have started at the D1 level and one who hasn't started is going into his 4th season and being touted as a leader. I honestly believe based on the report of our young guys we could be better equipped to handle losing a guy then most. I don't know how it will play out it, is a bunch of new guys to Bama in a new system, but I'm not worried about depth, I'm worried if this new set of guys are a good fit for the scheme and that the scheme is actually effective.

I don't disagree. But, I think most of us are anchored to Saban's assessment of the secondary. And that assessment was based on his evaluation of talent.

I'm sure the talent is there, even if not the top end talent at the position Saban liked coupled with quality depth.

It's a great squad. But, as you said, it's how they adapt to a new system and philosophy that matters.

The whole of the group may not be Saban standard. But, it's also not a Saban scheme. I'm bullish on the position group and the team as a whole.

Lots of change. Like you have said, adaptation of this new philosophy is key. I actually feel better than I have in some years past about this secondary. The year we had John Fulton, and the like. I was on edge and then the Dam broke.

I don't think this is a big deal but the thing is, at least to me, this DB group is Saban standard (talent evaluation wise), 11 of 14 guys were recruited by Saban.

Of the other 3 we know Saban wanted Sabb. Mack and Jones are undersized for typical Saban players admittedly making 12 of 14 being at Saban standard, which in most years that is how many DBs he had on the roster. Personally I think Mack will do a job in this scheme.

But as we all have said, that all is somewhat irrelevant. They are believed to have a high level of talent, now we just have to see if the scheme is right and if they can do the job in it.

This starting DB group is not “young”, but it is relatively inexperienced. But really no more so than a typical one under Saban. It seemed that almost every year there was a scramble in the portal to fill a hole. No different from this group.

Malachi - one of the most experienced DBs in college football.

Sabb - not on Downs’ level, but a very good safety with some experience and very good coaching under his belt.

Smith - would have been a starting safety or star in 2023 if not for the injury. It’s not his lack of playing that concerns me, it’s always a health concern with him. If Nick thought he was SEC starting caliber, he can play.

Domani - to me this guy is an enigma. Highly recruited player who struggled at USC. You can dismiss that however you want, but he has to prove it in the toughest conference in the nation.

“The other CB spot” - will it be the ACC transfer or a true freshman? Corner is the real concern. It could wind up being a strength at some point, or the worries may be real. I am high on Zabien from just watching his high school video, but does he have Surtain-level “light comes on early” traits? You can bet opponents are gonna test these outside fellas early and often.

Mack may be sorta the wild card here. He’s been cross-training at safety and nickel, apparently.

Keenan and Oatis on the inside should give opposing teams a lot of hell. I dont think many teams will be able to handle those dudes straight up. Those two are war daddies. Tim Smith has been in some battles too. Hope he's healthy.

If they are good, that will free up those LBs to go make plays. Lawson could have a great year.

All we need is a sackmaster. Who is it gonna be?
