Are we blaming football, booze, or the vaxx?

A legend at Winder-Barrow High. Also a state record holder in the discus. When he was throwing, they had to halt the running events because he'd throw the discus onto the track across the field from the throwing pit.
His Dad was a great coach and passed a couple of years ago. He coached both of my boys. Yes sir, gone too soon.

Well, this trend was way before Covid and the Vax. Started in their 30s with a lot in their 40s and early 50s. Heart and cancer were the 2 biggest primary causes. They passed at a much higher rate than my non football friends. One thing I can tell you is it is hard physically to adjust from going from spending your life up to 22 years old with mandatory bulking, lifting, workouts and overall structure to being on your own. We also had trainers and Doctors tending to our injuries when we played and once done, you are on your own. Immediately . It is also hard mentally and physically to stay in some sort of shape when age and all your injuries make even moderate exercise painful if you can do them at all. At the same time your metabolism slows and a lot of guys gain bad weight. It is a difficult cycle for a lot to break.

Damn
The immediate stop of it all is wild. I often think about HS seniors playing their last game. A game they have likely played with the same core group for 5 to 10 years. It's an abrupt stop. I guess I never really thought about it after college. You tend to think if them less as kids. Truth is. They are still young AF. I'm sure it's even tougher as they have just spent 4 to 5 extra years playing an elevated form of the game.
Condolences

I also think the physical pain and other aspects associated with going from being somebody to a has been leads to self medication. Some guys handle it better than others.
Lastly, not sure how much various performance enhancing stuff has on long term affects. Not everyone did them, so it is not a primary thing for some at least.
Bottom line, we seem to die younger.

I don’t recall owning a sandwich shop. Seems like a lot of work.

My son is going into his senior year in HS and has been working out or doing some kind of practice every day for 4 years….eating like a horse because he can at 17. I can see this being a problem with weight when he finishes and he’s only about 6’4 230.
I can only guess how tough this would be as a D1 lineman who is used to maintaining 280 to 320 or more. That’s a big transition just from a health perspective. Our systems aren’t meant to carry that much weight through life.

Because I didn’t know you were referring to the Peter Buck from Connecticut?
Posted on 7/4/24 at 5:56 am to Peter Buck
Wasn’t a hard stretch, but maybe in your illustrious football career, you got hit in the head a few too many times?
Posted on 7/4/24 at 8:58 am to GADAWG2017
I’d be willing to bet most people didn’t get the reference. I did take and give quite a few hits in my football career for sure though.

I’d be willing to bet not many people use the name
