but the simple reason is because Florida wasn't in the conversation

I see little difference between these:

Georgia lost to #3 Auburn
Texas lost to #4 Georgia
Auburn lost to #5 Texas
Miami lost to #6 Florida

If Florida wasn’t in the convo, maybe they should have been.

And if the Top 6 teams only had losses amongst each other, then they truly were the 6 best teams.

Nebraska played 1 game against the Top 6 (0-1).
Miami (1-1) and Texas (1-1) each played 2 games against the Top 6.
Auburn (2-1), Georgia (2-1) and Florida (1-2) each played 3 games against the Top 6.

Auburn and Georgia had the best resumes out of the group, and Auburn beat them in Athens.

It’s honestly the biggest joke in the AP poll’s history since 1965 when they started awarding champs after the bowls.

BYU in 1984 says hello. Since you mentioned Nebraska's SOS and "cream puff" schedule in 1983, BYU played no ranked teams, only two of their opponents that season won at least seven games, and they barely defeated a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl..
