What are they ranking them on? I’m assuming some political variable is included in the rankings since Texas is laughably at 29.

Utah is #1. If this were politics/religion biased, I highly doubt you would see Utah, New Hampshire, and Nebraska top 3.

Anyone that ranks Nebraska as the third best state to live in has never lived in Nebraska

You have to hand it to Utah. The Mormon faith is not my preference, but it is amazing how successful a society can be when it is collectively based upon a foundation of hard work, family, morality, discipline, education, physical fitness, social interaction, and charity.
Just take drug and alcohol problems alone away from any state, even Louisiana, and it’s probably top 15 within 2 decades. Same for 80%+ two parent households. Utah does it all. And it was considered a wasteland no one wanted which is how it filled with fleeing Mormons. There is nothing inherently advantageous about the land/location itself. That ranking is purely driven by the people there.

You can tell it is purely data driven rather than poll or opinion based. No one is picking Nebraska as a top 5 state, but I would bet anyone who gave it a chance would probably find that its a great place to raise a family or retire.

Without even looking, I am guessing that Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire fared well in this ranking.

Vacation destinations and great places to live are usually inversely correlated. Look at how many hotel rooms there are in New Orleans vs Omaha even though they are similarly sized metro areas.

Iowa does have the bridges of Madison County.
And I suppose it's a great place to live if you'd like to live under 2 feet of snow all winter. Plus no sports franchises. And no big cities with great cultural attractions. I guess if you like boring, Iowa is the place to be.

I think these rankings are based on measurable statistics such as education, income, cost of living, govt management, health, etc. It has nothing to do with geography, landmarks, or what there is to do there

I see the same with Mennonites in Ms. Incredibly nice and hard working people. They are very successful in business as well
