What he said was "We're not in the market of buying players."

What everyone else is pointing out is that he most definitely IS in the market of buying players. He just thought the price was too high. That's very different than saying you're not in the market at all.

If you read the entire quote, he's equating "buying players" to simply throwing money at players to come to your school. Think Texas A&M in 2022 with their high school class or Ole Miss this year through the portal.

That's different from offering a competitive NIL package like schools such as Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State. Those schools may not offer the most, but players still go there because they see the big picture.

Versus going to Miami or somewhere because you got paid.

You got to also remember it's more fluid than ever to become elite. Miami is already putting together top 10 high school recruiting classes. If this portal class puts them in the playoff this upcoming season it will be worth it for them and they will only heighten their profile for the best high school players a la Georgia. I can say the same about Ole Miss.

Lastly, I don't think Miami has to outbid anyone. They do seemingly have unlimited funds but they also are selling living in Miami.

I disagree.

He was virtue signaling. He was trying to promote the idea that unlike those other evil programs, LSU doesn't pay money for their players. The players at LSU are all there because they love LSU.

And that's pure BS. LSU does pay players. Kelly was trying to promote a completely false narrative to try to excuse misses in the portal.

An accurate statement would have been: "Yeah, we didn't sign any portal DL. They wanted more than we were willing to give them."

He didn't say that though. He went with a holier-than-thou approach that was completely untrue. It's unsurprising that fans of other teams are calling him out on that.
